My son and I attended the game last night at Scotlandville and to our dismay Javonte Smart was in a sweat suit not playing. He had a minor injury from the tournament in Lake Charles. We were disappointed, along with Will Wade, who was also in attendance. The game actually turned out to be a very good game.
Scotlandville pressed Dunham early and I know it was 25 to 4 at end of first quarter, and I think 27 to 4. Dunham turned the ball over numerous times and could not handle the press. 4 points in a quarter is not good. Scotlandville backed the press off in the second quarter and Duhnam caught up. They have Jordan Wright, who scored 26, but scored I believe 20 in the second half. Odysst Walker, 6 ft 3 Parkview transfer, had 21 and did most of his scoring in the first half. He is a solid guard and can get to the rack easily. Dunham starts another transfer, Ralph Davenport from Live Oak, who is a guard and had 6. Their other guard must have been about 1 for 12 from the field. I believe he is a football player. Not sure of his name, but I did notice Mike Williams, the QB, was in the stands and not dressed. He played last year.
Scotlandville was led by Beekman who scored 25 and a sophmore Joseph who scored 21. All night he made any three point shot where he did not have to dribble. He made five 3 pointers and maybe 6. He also made the game winning shot with one second to go. Jordan Wright hit an amazing fade away three pointer in the left hand corner with six seconds to go in the game. Dunham started celebrating thinking Scotlandville was going to call a timeout, and they did not. Took the inbounds pass coast to coast and made the short shot with one second to go. It was an exciting finish to say the least. Joseph will be a spot up shooter, he is a left handed sophmore and can really shoot. Beekman took the role that Smart normally plays and did well. He was the primary ball handler and distributor. He have a few great assists and consistently scored when Scotlandville needed a bucket.
This was Carlos Sample's 500th career win. The Advocate stated that he is 308-58 in 11 seasons at Scotlandville. He is a great coach and if you look at the banners in the gym you will see the proof. 4 state championships with a total of 7 losses in those years I think. He was runner up to Brother Martin, Natchitoches Central, and St. Augustine. The games vs Brother Martin and Natchitoches Central, Scotlandville could have easily won. 4 championships in 7 years is really good, and I would argue it should be 6 in 7 years. I remember being in the gym with the assistant coach Washington missed 2 free throws in the final in the 4th quarter. Washington was a freshmen and a dead eye shooter. Anyway as always if you like basketball pay the money and go watch Scotlandville. Best $12 I spent in a while.
