This isn't getting much attention, but these are 2 jobs that can attract some good names. What are the updates on this job?

Don't know how much they pay up there but Rayville always has talent. A good coach could make that program a Power.

If the people of Rayville has any sense whatsoever, they’d do whatever it takes to get bo Barton back over there. That school is crawling with talent and apparently he knew how to get them on the field and what to do with it.

The pay isn't what it takes to attract a powerhouse coach.
Yes, Rayville is flushed with talent and the gene pool is insane. But, the money isn't and other factors.
There is a reason why they constantly underachieve.

Coach Barton is one of the best. I lived up the street from the school during the years Richard Murphy and Chris Tollliver were there.

Barton can’t come back. He owes them to much money.

Having played Raville week 1 the last 2 years, both wins for FP, I would say that they were not in good enough shape to start the season. Their offseason program most have been lacking. They have been, over the last few years, a team that got better at mid season and have made some deep playoff runs.

Barton can’t come back. He owes them to much money. I don’t know anything about that, but whatever is salary was...he was most likely vastly underpaid. He did a phenomenal job.

I have literally never seen Rayville line up without a handful of D1 athletes, maybe even some pro-potential guys. Literally never.
I have also literally never (since Barton left) seen them line up with any semblance of discipline or a plan.
As Double J said, they looked like hot garbage the first half of every season under Bursey, then steadily improved, I assume because nobody around there could be bothered to work out over the summer or anything else.
I have no idea if this was a function of the head coach not getting it done or if the administration had his hands tied or if the kids just won't buy in or what. But I know that Rayville has the athletes every single year to compete for a state title, and they have consistently underachieved, even in years where they made deep playoff runs.

Oh, and Delhi was finally getting it together football wise, then they were smart enough to run off their coach. Great job guys. Best coach you've had since the 90s and you let him walk because you're too stupid to keep him. *slow clap*
Huge potential there too, as was shown last season, but unbelievably poor administration.

For a teacher and football coach with 10 years of experience the teaching salary is $37,016 per year. I have no idea what the coaching stipend is but man... That is REALLY LOW... Even if the coaching stipend is $10,000 (which realistically will never be) that's $47,016. That's what five year teacher in caddo parish makes without any stipends added in... They are a basketball powerhouse and have lots of talent for football. I wish Rayville the best of luck...

* The comment about the pay is dead-on. Richland Parish is one of the state's lowest-paying districts.
* Due to a years-long enrollment decline, the district recently announced an open-enrollment policy. There is no guarantee Rayville kids will stay in Rayville.
* Because of the low pay and declining enrollment, young coaches typically are laid off or move on. Rayville went into the summer with one full-time assistant and he left for a better-paying gig before the school year. Either no one applied for spots or there were no spots, but Rayville did not have any full-time assistant coach with HS coaching experience this year.
* The coach/AD title comes with classes. It has been around 4-5.
* The principal is interim and there is yet no clear answer if he will be retained or renewed.
* On the plus, Rayville is a great place to be if you truly care about making a positive impact in kids' lives. There are no shortage of opportunities to make a difference.

I had an opportunity to go to Rayville as a coach at one point and know a little about this situation. It is a bad one. Incredible talent. Fair facilities. No support from the district whatsoever. Pay is awful. AD/HC is expected to be a regular teacher most of the day. Very little money in the community to help make things happen. If I had to predict the future of Rayville HS with the recent move to open enrollment and the other factors, I would expect a continued decline.

My understanding is there was friction between the administration and the last football coach. As far as pay, base salaries do not include coaching supplements as well as tax bonuses in most cases. Classes for a head football coach, well, most head coaches have other duties in public schools if its classes or other things.

The teacher pay argument is subjective. We have teachers every year that leave Franklin parish to go to Richland because it pays better. Pay that seems very low to many of you in suburban areas is quite intising in the more rural parishes.

And then when you through in extended contracts, tax bumps, etc, the pay may be a little more competitive than most think.

Agreed. However, with the time it takes to be the head coach, athletic director as well as teach 4-5 classes, be lesson planned out, etc. etc. etc. $37,016 per year before any coaching stipend is not worth it. In a rural or suburban setting... I think we can all agree on that... Maybe for a young aspiring coach. Coaches with families will avoid this like the plague...

What the base pay scale says in based on a classroom teacher, 9 month contract usually. Its not uncommon for Head Coaches to have extended contracts (10-11-12 month) along with stipends for coaching, along with tax bump checks. My guess would be the Head Football Coach at Rayville would make well more than 37k.

I do understand. I'll explain what I meant. Even under an extended contract being a head coach, athletic director, and teacher is not worth the money. Let's say its $50K. The time it takes to lesson plan, practice plan, game plan, and plan all other athletic activities is not worth it... Time is not worth the money and we are all underpaid as teachers and coaches as it is...

A quick glance at most districts' Web sites will show you the teaching salary schedule and you can usually find coaching stipends as well. The base salary and stipend at Rayville won't amount to much but the AD bump will surely make it palatable. The issue will be the class demands. This is not me saying "coaches shouldn't have to teach." Both of Rayville's basketball coaches have teaching loads and they seem to be okay in that department. But football requires more in terms of time on the job - equipment, film, larger roster, the logistics of transport, feeding the team, etc. Whoever takes this job won't really be "allowed" to start thinking about football until maybe 2 p.m. with that class load. Let's also keep in mind there are no on-staff high school assistants at the moment. And there is no district athletic director, so there is no buffer for the AD duties. Rayville had a higher enrollment back when Barton was there, so he was afforded more time to be in the field house. Presently, Barton is pulling in more coaching 8-man MAIS ball in semi-retirement than he would get at Rayville under the present structure. Here is their new open-enrollment policy, which explains things better than I ever could: richland.k12.la.us/documents/PressRelease1920GradeTransportationProposal.pdf

I got there in 2006 and my buddy got there in 2005.
The coach before him was at the school for 33 years and taught PE.

Apparently "people in the know" are saying that Andy Robinson has accepted the Head position at Rayville or Delhi. Not sure which, depends on who you talk to.

Apparently "people in the know" are saying that Andy Robinson has accepted the Head position at Rayville or Delhi. Not sure which, depends on who you talk to. Find that a little... well... a lot.... hard to believe. He just took that St Fred’s job and had an outstanding first year and has a great staff. Of course, Andy grew up almost on the Delhi campus, even though he went to Riverfield in Rayville, so he is known in both towns. Unless he has had second thoughts about retirement and insurance issues at St Fred’s, I just don’t see this happening

Insurance, retirement, ability to have athletes year in and year out, lot of reasons. Andy attended Delhi and Riverfield both in his high school years, if my recollection is correct.
