I heard on the radio that a fella who golfs for LSU is participating in some big golf thing (this weekend, maybe?). I'm not a golf guy and don't care.
But I'm wondering: If a guy that plays Golf for LSU is playing in some Golf event, where money is the prize (and I assume it is), how is that possible? What makes that any different from any other sport? Why can't a basketball player from LSU also play basketball for money when he's not playing round ball for the Tigers?

They can play as an amateur, if they place in the money they don't get any it will be split by the people who finish 1 place ahead and 1 place behind them. This just happened in the Masters with a golfer from UGA, I think he would have won $150k or something like that but had to leave with less than $200 in his checking account. Couldn't claim any or would have lost his amateur status.

It's a shame they won't let them accept the money on behalf of the school and put the money into a scholarship fund for the next guy coming up. Or to help cover costs of the program or whatever.

Phil Mickelson actually won a Pga event as an amateur. The second place got the money but Phil got the trophy and credit for the win

The golfer in question is Shreveport's Sam Burns. Another local golfer, Philip Barbaree of Byrd, will be playing in a PGA event this weekend.

Is it worth my time to leave college or finish my golfing career. I have a friend who did this, what he learned is that not only can he not make a living as a pro golfer, he really needed to buckle down on his studies and get that Engineering degree. Much more profitable for him over a lifetime, than 3 to 5 years of less than mediocre golf.

no, individual players in team sports Like what? let's say Fournette could play for both LSU and an NFL team if he wants, just that he won't get paid by the pro team, or have his jersey sold, or be marketed, etc. like an amateur golfer competing on the PGA Tour or maybe Fournette in football is a bad example, in that you can get hurt too easily... but other sports it could work

Will he be going to LSU? I believe Barbaree is a junior and has already committed to LSU. I heard this morning about someone from Lafayette asked the question,Who would want to play the State golf tournament in Shreveport? That was asked at an LHSAA committee meeting while they were deciding where to play state. With the talent we have? He has no idea!

Already committed to LSU and gets a chance to swing it with the pros. I have the golf channel ap so I'm gonna mark him as a favorite to follow his scores.

I heard that it was an owner of a Lafayette as agency. This info came from a committee member. How do they determine where they are played? Bids? I can remember not that long ago it was played at our course in Crowley!
