I tell you what. If this is the type of S**t they are going to call for some of the tackles being made, they might as well strip the pads off these guys and stick flags in their uniforms. SMH.

Maybe you’re just watching a ref crew unfamiliar with SCC or CBA?

Maybe you’re just watching a ref crew unfamiliar with SCC or CBA? It’s been going on a lot lately. It’s like you can’t touch the QB or hit a player close to the sidelines and k knock him out of bounds. You can’t even grab and player and swing them around hard for the tackle. It’s like any tackle, that looks to aggressive, is a personal foul penalty.

At this point the teams should be coached not to do silly stuff… like stay on your dude as he’s going out of bounds but keep your hands off him…

And sure enough, it’s a Lafayette crew….so the same thing I’ve gotten used to all year. Can someone explain the rule about a players helmet coming off? I’ve seen illegal participation called a few times when a player simply continued to pursue the play. Calvary had a kid literally recover a fumble with no helmet on, and not only was there no penalty, the recovery stood. Can someone make that make sense?

I don’t care if he’s running towards the sidelines, as long as his foot is touching green, you should be able to drop the hammer on him. 🤣

Of course, we wore leather helmets with no face masks back then too, so there's that.

NFHS does have an illegal participation rule for a player who continues playing after his helmet comes off. I asked specifically about this play when it happened if it should have been a foul. When I looked at the replay, it was extremely close. The player's helmet comes off as he's going to the ground. The ball basically rolls into his lap, and he he recovers the fumble. He didn't pursue the ball, but his helmet was off when he gained possession of the ball. Should he not recover the fumble and just let it sit on the ground because his helmet is off? It's a great question, and I'd love to get a ruling about how that should have been officiated. I certainly think a flag COULD have been thrown, but I'm glad that it wasn't thrown in that situation.

When talking with the sideline officials during the LCA game, they said every change of possession is reviewed and flags can be thrown for illegal participation if it happened during the play, so I'm assuming they understood the timing of things and decided it wasn't a flag in that specific play.
