LHSAA has brought down the hammer on Newman boys hoops. Greenies must forfeit all games in the last THREE seasons, which includes two state championships, and is banned from the playoffs this season. The program has been placed on restrictive probation but will be allowed to complete its regular season schedule this season. Head coach Randy Livingston has also been suspended for one calender year effective immediately. crescentcitysports.com/newman-boys-basketball-program-ruled-ineligible-for-playoffs-livingston-suspended/

They were the favorite to win again... I am sure it was a Recruited player that did not get his way... Left the team, and then BURNED IT DOWN... OUCH...

Update per Christophe Dabe of nola.com: The three seasons that will be covered are 2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22 meaning that Newman's state title from last season will stand

LCA announced on Twitter they're claiming the championship Newman vacated. I just have one thing to say since I'm 99.99999% sure Jay runs it and that if he doesn't then he approves everything that gets posted there
Jay. Stop. Between this and letting sports like softball determine moving down to 2A, I'm about ready to declare myself an Acadiana Renaissance fan. And it's 100% because of him. Still love the coaches and the people there, but I'm about done with Jay. If it was a close game I'd have understood claiming that one, but that Newman team simply outclassed LCA that year. It's just as pathetic as AES claiming the football championship the year Lab vacated it and I've been on them from the day they claimed that one.

LCA's very first ring in men's basketball was earned after 3 top 28's and a loss in the title game, this kind of stuff is like 2017 UCF.

Executive Summary: I suspect that Newman's violations are based on Livington's improper contacting and/or solicitation of players - - particularly through his AAU contacts and non-high school basketball tournaments. I suspect one or more of the basketball players paying a reduced tuition is not the problem.
Based on stories told me directly by parents at multiple New Orleans private schools, the pattern for prospective student-athletes is this:
Family applies to school for academic admission. The kid is admitted. The family completes a financial assistance application. The school offers financial assistance (e.g., reduced tuition) based on the financial need of the family. That seems to comport with the LHSAA's rules, which provide:
2.4 FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 2.4.1 If tuition is charged, it must be paid by parents, legal guardian, or other relative. If a parent, guardian, or other relative secures a loan for payment of tuition, it must remain an obligation of the parent, guardian, or other relative to repay the principal and interest in full with no exceptions. Schools that charge tuition may administer school-based financial assistance programs for students who attend those schools. Financial assistance is defined as funds from various sources that are administered and provided by a school to students to pay or assist in paying costs directly related to their education at the school. Financial assistance must be totally unrelated to a student’s athletic interest, potential or performance.
2.4.2 School administered financial assistance provided by a school must be administered by the school; meaning that the school, through an established process that conforms to this policy, makes the final determination of the student who is to receive the assistance and the amount of assistance to be given. No student-athlete may accept financial assistance from any other person, business or organization unless it is received from one upon whom the student-athlete is naturally or legally dependent.
2.4.3 Criteria for Providing School-based Financial Assistance: Financial assistance must be based entirely on financial need. The amount of financial assistance for which a student is determined to qualify must meet the same guidelines of financial assistance which is provided to each and every student who qualifies for financial assistance. Financial assistance must be totally unrelated to a student’s athletic interest, potential or performance. Financial assistance based even partially on a student’s athletic interest, potential or performance shall be prohibited. In order to determine the basis for need, effective January 2015, all schools awarding financial aid shall use an LHSAA-recognized agency as approved by the Executive Committee. The use of any unapproved agency shall render the student ineligible.
My strong suspicion is that all LA private schools - - particularly New Orleans based schools - - can follow these provisions.
So for the families that qualify, it appears that reduced tuition is permitted. But let me know if you are reading this differently.
This is why I've concluded that LHSAA likely found that Randy violated the rules on soliciting basketball kids to attend Newman.
I came here looking for information, not to pontificate - - though obviously I provided my suspicions. My information is anecdotal, plus reading the LHSAA's guidebook. I'm hoping one of you has more information on how permissible financial assistance works, and whether there is some line that schools cross that gets them in trouble.

does anyone know whether the LHSAA's findings/investigation is subject to some sort of a sunshine rule that requires the production of the materials? Is the LHSAA a state government entity? Or a private entity?

I would think some parts of those rules are obsolete in the NIL era??? my recall from a few years ago is that NIL in Louisiana has NOT been approved for high school kids. Hopefully, someone can confirm that's still the story.

I wont get into the meat grinder of it all but what Kwaters put above is essentially what it has to do with, the AAU curcuit and Livingtson, one of those kids who is not enrolled at Newman anymore basically issued what went down to get him there, it was brought to the LHSAA attention and they started thier investigation back in early August leading into the school year.

Hopefully, someone can confirm that's still the story. There was a story where a Brother Martin wrestler got an NIL deal allowing him to not have to work his part time job…, so certainly there’s more “one of those kids who is not enrolled at Newman anymore basically issued what went down to get him there” The crazy part is that Newman shouldn’t have to cheat to get top athletes to want to go there… they’re the richest private school in NOLA

Which coincides with the same ruling given for Treydez Green at Zachary. Can play football but not basketball cause of AAU relationships(recruiting).

If Trev's joining the ARCA's staff (or Lafayette Renaisance Charter Academy's coaching staff), that's news to me.

I would say that any team that was cheated out of a fair championship should and would take the title retroactively if the other team was deemed to have cheated. why should "sports like softball" have any less say or respect on the decision making that genuinely affects them? every sport should have equal say in those decisions, and those sports know and understand the position it puts the other sports in as well in that. I know you didn't grow up in LCA like me and others we went to school with, but LCA isn't where it is today without the leadership of Pastor Jay. Including the ups and the downs, but one thing is always certain with Pastor Jay, he will always do what he feels is best for the school and community and as the leader of the school and community he should.

Or a different one Trev Faulk is busy being an NIL Agent shopping kids around to schools for money while already on campus at another school. Him and a few others are trying to line their pockets off of kids.

Meanwhile coach Livingston is taking the LHSAA to court… a judge in Orleans Parish granted a temporary injunction allowing him to coach until January 18
Feel bad for him not knowing to not make what he wants bigger than his institution and putting them through more negative PR. If Newman had sense they’d dismiss him ASAP

Put this in the for what it is worth category: The judge made up her own facts in the ruling. The LHSAA is a private, voluntary, organization, it’s been settled.
