Trying to get a little clarification on what is considered member and non-member schools in regards to LHSAA rules. I have a kid who has moved to Louisiana from Tennessee and cannot play sports for one year? Under 1.13.3 it states that transfers from non-member to member schools are immediately eligible? lawyer up, file suit, he will get eligible real quick.

Meeting with some of the school’s staff next week and would like to be able to explain why he should be eligible. Is it because of the member/non member transfer.

Whomever told you that the kid was ineligible does not know the rules. Out of state transfers are eligible. That's their school of first choice

He is immediately eligible at the school he is zoned for. If he lives in school zone A but wants to go to school B he will have to sit out a year if they do not share zones.

What if he's in a parish with open enrollment? Or if he's attending a private school or charter school? We'd need more information to determine the kid's eligibility. Evidently all students should be brought before the LSL Court of Summary Justice before they'll know if they will be eligible to play sports. Lord knows it would be faster than getting a ruling form the LHSAA.

If he is living with his parents he will be eligible. If he is living with a relative he will have to sit unless he gets a hardship ruling in his favor.

Here is the whole story. My wife and I divorced about 4 years ago and she and her son moved to Tennessee. We have reconciled and she is now living in Haynesville and her son is attending Haynesville high school. I live in Homer, which is where she would rather be living, but it was recommended by school officials that she move to Haynesville so that her son would be eligible for sports. This kid was in the Haynesville school system prior to moving to Tennessee and returned to the same school system after they moved back. The big eligibility question with the school seems to be residency. They know that she lives in Haynesville, they also know that she and her son spends the weekends with me and that seems to be a huge question mark for some reason. The thing is, I’m not even entirely sure that it even matters, I believe that Claiborne parish is an open enrollment school district, but I don’t know how to find that out and if it even matters or not. So I have contacted an attorney and am waiting for them to schedule a consultation. There are other things that will be discussed with the attorney outside of eligibility, not at all happy with the way the school is handling this situation.

That's a dual residency issue. Mom is custodial parent. Her legal address is used for eligibility. Regardless of open enrollment, if a student already in high school goes out of zone, they have to sit out a year. I have seen a senior lose eligibility because mom moved family from one zone to another, and kept her old home in her name so an adult child could stay there and just pay rent. Since mom's original address (still in her name) was still in the old school's zone, that was considered the home zone for the student. Ruled ineligible for dual residency. Unfortunately, eligibility is a tangled web the LHSAA weaves.

But my thinking is that if you can live anywhere in Claiborne parish and attend any school in Claiborne parish that you choose, how iis it that the entire parish isn’t an attendance zone for all schools? But besides that, she lives in Haynesville and spends the weekend in Homer.

Lots of misinformation here. It is all spelled out in the handbook which is online. If a student establishes residency at a school for 1 year, they are eligible at that school no matter where they live.
1.12 RESIDENCE
1.12.4 Once a student establishes eligibility at a school through attendance for at least one calendar year, he/she shall remain eligible for as long as he/she continues to attend that school regardless of where his/her parent(s)/guardian reside unless this eligibility is negated by another section in this residence and school transfers rule such as in the bona fide move section or the foreign exchange student section.
