This is the first Friday since their layoffs and the sports section, at least online, really misses Bret Hudson. I had to go to the Town Talk to even find a mention of the FP/Tioga game. No game capsule...nothing at the News Star. Bring back Bret!!!!

The lafayette advertiser (also a gannet property ) still has Kevin Foote and Trey Labet, both real good but it's a huge area and they have limited space., all the small papers around here do a great job on their local teams.

Trey Labat does a really good job. We are lucky in the Gonzales area to have two really good writers in Peter Pasqua and Kyle Riviere. Both do a fantastic job of covering everyone.
By and Large though I do feel that financial issues and mismanagement have really caused a decline in the quality and quantity of coverage around the state.

First the afternoon and morning edition cities in Louisiana became one newspaper cities. Then the one newspaper cities cut down the number of pages in their papers to about half what they once were. Now they are cutting back on personnel. Makes you wonder what the future holds for the paper print newspaper companies.

All the newspapers have become left wing propaganda machines except for the Sports sections. When the Shreveport Journal shut down because no one read it, The Times took over with the same leftist slant. Then Gannett began to buy all the papers and they are totally liberal. People have quit buying. They are cutting the only staff that many people still read, that being the Sports staff. If this continues the print media will be history one day.

If I decide to stop subscribing to the Times it will be because the Times has finally gone over to the dark side of the racist, looney radical right. The problem newspapers are having is due to the emergence of the electronic media. It has nothing to do with "liberal" ideology. s think that any newspaper that doesn't parrot Fox or Rush Limbaugh or some other radical right wing propaganda shill for the GOP must be a "liberal" newspaper. Newspapers all over the country are having financial problems not just those in states. The Times has more right wing propaganda syndicated editorial writers than syndicated editorial writers. If you don't believe that just count them.

I quit my subscription to Sports Illustrated because of a smart alec article they put out about my Cowboys when they were playing the Steelers in the Super Bowl back in the late 70's. I have not bought one single issue since. I quit my subscription to the Shreveport Times back in 1999 because of biased articles they were putting out about my Evangel Eagles. I have not bought one single issue since. I thought the Times was left leaning, but I am not afraid to read opposing views. Just don't mouth off about my favorite teams, because I will never forget. I don't feel threatened when someone calls me part of the "looney radical right", or right . I can even handle being called a bitter American clinging to my guns and religion or a basket of deplorables. But I get damn tired of being called a "racist" just because I have conservative views. The word is so overused that it really doesn't mean anything anymore, but I still don't like it.You are better than that Sixpack.

If you are implying that I called you a racist I will ask you to show me where I did that. I was responding to a post to someone who chose to voice his insulting conspiracy theory about why print newspapers are now facing financial problems in this country. Not all conservatives are s and I never said they were. The word "" applies to radical conservatives and the term is no worse than the use of the word "liberal" by s in an attempt to insult people with decent political views even though the definition of the word is anything but an insult. Any honest and unbiased person knows that there are many racists on the political right in this country. That's why they constantly repeat the lie that President is a Muslim, why they call minorities lazy, why there are so few minorities in national elected republican offices, and why many right wingers support a political party that uses the "Southern Strategy" simply to get the votes of racists. I don't consider you to be that kind of person but there are plenty of them around and although I don't start fights with them I sure as hell don't have to take any crap from them.

I do not agree with most of what you just said but I respect you and I do not feel like arguing about it. The only thing I will say, is that there are racist in every aspect of our society including and I will not accept your assertion that they tend to be on the right. I hear the term racist directed towards conservatives, by , so often that it gets very tiring. If you did not mean it that way, then please accept my apologies. Having said that, you are the one who has gone over to the Dark Side. You have openly admitted your support for Byrd, and it is hard for me to forgive you for that.

If you are referring to Robert Byrd I supported him only after he gave up his racist past and became a supporter of minority rights. Sort of like how some republucans say they now support Donald Trumo becauase he has given up groping Females by their private parts.

I tried to segue out of this conversation but you don't seem to want to let it go. Yeah that Donald Trump is a cad, but it does not appear that he has groped near as many female private parts as Hillary.

i am not racist i resent your left wing remarks. YOUR kind of thinking is what is destroying our fiber. Socialism on the horizon. Which has never worked anywhere on earth. So I for one challenge your left wing remarks. so back to football. USA all the way. LTC. USA Retired.

On the subject of newspapers, I hate that it seems like there is very limited coverage of high school football in the local rag (s'port times). I guess they may print stats and what not, but the online content has nothing but a few short write ups the day after the game and sometimes a "story" during the week. It's just not like it used to be and that really sucks. I used to buy the paper every weekend just for the sports section.

The Town Talk is not what it used to be with sports section. Lamar Gafford is a good journalist but is basically by himself covering 30 high school football teams, nearly 50 high schools when you include B and C schools, plus Louisiana College, LSU-Alexandria, and Northwestern State. He has a guy that covers Tioga and one that covers Pineville for him then only 1 or 2 stringers helping with everything else. New dumb Friday deadline of 8pm has moved high school football articles to Sundays

The coverage is still pretty good but its not nearly like it used to be. Our game against Vinton where we kicked the fg to win had and article with about three sentences. They also used to post first down penalty yards etc in all the box scores which they don't anymore. They used to do a weekly thing that posted each area teams stats as far as rushing and passing yards averaged per game , yards given up per game etc. They also used to cover basketball good now its pretty much non existent. They used to give a preview of each area game on Friday morning with insight to how the teams matchup and stuff, it was real descriptive. Now they say something like LA vs Rosepine LA has strong running game will be hard to stop and that's it lol.

But the American Press has always kind of catered to schools like Barbe and Sulphur and St. Louis
