I do not normally read or post on this "Other Talk" message board, but I don't want to get the "snowflakes" started by posting this on the Football board. January 26, 1861, 156 years ago today, Louisiana became an independent nation when they became the 6th state to secede from the U.S. When the vote at the old Capitol in Baton Rouge was complete a flag with a red star and pelican on a white background was unfurled on the Capitol steps. That is the flag I use as my avatar, although it was never officially adopted. For the next couple of weeks Louisiana was an independent nation until they joined with 6 other states to form the Confederate States. The flag below was the official flag of the independent Nation of Louisiana. Attachment Deleted

I used to participate on a Texas HS football forum. In their "other" section there was a guy that did a "on this day in history" every single day. Even after I quit posting on that board, I would still go there to read his "on this day" bit. Was always interesting and pretty often inspired a lot of good discussion.
Thanks for posting this.
