Took in the final day of the Madison Prep Tourney yesterday. Really good day of basketball. The highlight of the night was the championship game between Riverside vs Madison Prep, a Back and Forth affair that went to Double OT.
Jared Butler finished with 46 points, 38 of which were after halftime thanks to foul trouble. Kobe Julien and Jahrein Spencer were incredible for Madison Prep finishing with 33 and 18, respectively. Prep looked like they would pull away in the 3rd after a viscous put back dunk by Spencer but Timmy Byrd had another trick up his sleeve. After the next Riverside score, they jumped to a 2-2-1 full court trap that cause at least 5 Madison Prep turnovers. In the 4th as Riverside looked like they would be claiming victory, Kobe Julien knocked down 3 threes in the end including one with 3 seconds left. Butler almost ended it in regulation with a 3/4 court heave that rimmed in and out. Jeff Jones went to double Butler every time he touched it about midway through the 4th but riverside stepped up. Big shots from Banks and Foley, and stellar defense from Robertson became the difference.
Also in the tourney, Carencro and Woodlawn-Shreveport are really good and are 4a contenders for sure. Carencro is athletic all over and have a great player off the bench #32, they are extremely well coached and had Madison Prep on the ropes. Woodlawn-Shreveport also stood out, they led through 3 quarters vs Riverside before they took over. Woodlawn reminds me of Golden State they play very different. Not many rolls/flashes to the basket, instead they pop/flare to the 3pt line and they can’t really shoot it! Fun day

Sounds like I missed some serious action. I'll get to see a couple of those teams you mentioned in Lafayette this week (Madison Prep, Carencro).

Prep best player is out but they can still really shoot it and very athletic. Carencro was the most athletic team in the Tourney. I expect them to go deep in 4a

They are very well deserving of the current ranking. That’s a good squad they have. Keep a good eye on Woodlawn-Shreveport in 4a, they can really shoot it and not gun shy either

I was in attendance on Friday and Saturday, however I did not stay for the final. I watched it the next day on youtube under Off the Bench Sports. The full game is there, not great quality, but better than nothing.
I agree with what Mt was saying. Great recap, I enjoyed reading it.
I have never seen Woodlawn-Shreveport. Lets say this, much different and vastly superior to Woodlawn of Baton Rouge since Elmo Fernandez has been there. Watching his teams is like watching paint dry. Woodlawn from Shreveport has 5 starters who can go! All five guys can shoot and two have some size. I look for them to make Top 28. I have seen Carencro a few times and they are also good. They have a guard who is good and a couple of bigs.
Jared Butler never has a bad game. I saw last night they beat Scotlandville again. He is an excellent player. Can get a shot off at any time and has timeline range. I also was impressed by Sophie B. Wright. I think Riverside has beat them twice and Carencro. Other than that undefeated. Big team for a 3A school.

They are young mostly soph and jr team. And they may not see a team that can pressure them the way Carencro did until deep in the 3a playoffs vs maybe a Madison Prep, Peabody, Washington-Marion type.

We play Sophie B. Wright at Peabody on 1/12. Ive been wanting to see why Smith scheduled them. Not a usual opponent, he usually does that to see somebody before the playoffs but wouldnt do it at home if he didnt think we could beat them.
We are a Soph and Jr laden team as well. We do have some great scoring guards and a 6'7 and 6'9. We're rounding into form though. We lost to Dunham without our top scorer and avenged our only other loss to Bossier. We beat Natchitoches Central, Woodlawn (SH) and Washington Marion. As young as we are I think we could be talented enough to not just be playing at the end but standing at the top.
Sidenote: Coach Smith is just 13 wins away from win 1000 not including our game against Grace Christian tonight.

I’ve heard from a guy down here he expects them to make a deep run. Those are 3 extremely good wins! 3a should be very exciting maybe the best with Peabody, Madison Prep, Sophie B Wright, Washington Marion. Am I missing anyone? Don’t get me wrong, Sophie B Wright is very good, went toe to toe with Riverside the first time. Riverside housed Them in Baton Rouge. Sophie B has a ton of length at every position. There two 6’6-6’6 guys are skilled. Should be a very good game. Btw, Sophie B has the best warmups I’ve seen so far lol. Those warmup hoodies are nice!

MT, Bossier is very good and should be back at the Top 28 (Class 4A). They have a good group of athletes but the most exciting one is a little dynamo guard that stands no taller than 5'7" or so. His name is Jacoby Decker and can straight up shoot the rock. Bossier is 20-6 and beat Woodlawn (SH) 85-84 last week to tie them atop the district standings. Decker scored 37 in that game. I dont think there are too many seniors on that team which is great because that means they will be here in Lake Charles next year to the start the season at "THE SHOWDOWN IN THE LAKE" along with the Rayville Hornets. As far as 3A is concerned, I'd replace Washington-Marion with Wossman or Carroll. I've seen Washington-Marion play several times this season and I wouldn't put them in the mix.

There’s wossman and Carroll you mention up north. Peabody in Central LA of course. South you have Madison Prep and Sophie B Wright. I don’t think it will matter of Prep gets Leblanc back. But we will see for sure

The addition of the Spencer kid took them to another level this year. I was shocked they were able to maintain without playing any of the 9th graders he has a 6’7” and 6’6” freshman waiting and 3 above 6’3” 8th graders. It is scary what he has over there

I saw Spencer for the first time at Lafayette Christian's tournament. He's the kid that came in from Assumption I think. He's about 6'4" or so. I like his game.
Regarding the freshmen and 8th graders, wow is all I can say. They are loaded.

Very nice game. Will get physical. Should end up group of 5/mid major type school. But the lines are so blurred in college basketball now that’s better than many power 5 programs
