This might be a biased question, but putting the bias aside, if you are starting a new school and putting together a football team, who would you hire to coach them? (Chose Any coach in their prime) Here are some I would consider: J.T. Curtis Red Franklin Dennis Dunn Don Shows Lewis Cook Vic Dalrymple Bill Stubbs Freddie Hallman... he knows how to get performance out of undersized and outmanned teams and will be able to have success that would allow the program to grow, regardless of the talent influx. He's done it at St. Marys, Menard, Grant, Menard again, and Lakeview. Ill take him in my foxhole any day.

Frank Monica, Carl Porter, Dellahouyse(probably spelled wrong lol) all deserve mention too

I, too, think Chick Childress would be my pick. I only wish he did what he did in today’s era with social media and all the hype. I think that affects how people compare teams today versus teams from the past.

I’m partial, but I know Coach Red will get every ounce of effort out of his kids. He’s as good as it gets when it comes to teaching fundamentals and getting his athletes to overachieve.

I’m taking Red Franklin 11 titles 350+ wins and never had the cloud over his program that some other winning programs did or do but really can’t go wrong with most or all of these coaches. Also the Ruston greats nickname is “Chick”, Jimmy “Chick” Childress, not Chuck. Lol

What a great list of High School Hall of Fame coaches. Can I pick them all? Anyone could instantly make a program light years better. All legends on the gridiron.

There honestly isnt a wrong answer when looking at that list.
To make things a little more interesting lets try this...if you were looking for a new coach and had to hire a young up and coming coach, who would you go after? Id say they can only have 5 or so years of HC expirence or less; or perhaps a young coordinator that is ready to be a HC.

I was going to list Charlie and Chick but I figured that if I left them off, it might awaken our sleeping Ruston and Neville fans to start posting again. Im a fan of neither, but what Chick did at Ruston over his tenure was ridiculous when considering what neville was also doing with Brown. Those are 2 national powers down the interstate from each other and both apart of the same coaching tree. I was wrong about 3 top 19; I meant 3 top 10. Also was apart of the best district in louisiana in 4A ball. You can't really go wrong with either Shows or Childress when it comes to public schools. Private it is obvious, Curtis or Dunn. Today it is Karr's HC or Brewerton. Both establishing dynasties in a new Era of football for public and private University and Catholic. I'm right you know. . It's hard to tell how good a coach at a school like kart actually is. When you have overwhelming talent in every game you just have to not be completely inept. Not saying he ain't great but in high school it's more about who a coach is winning with when looking at the great ones

Assuming you are referring to "Karr"? Maybe you are right. I havent seen them enough. Their coaching impressed the heck out of me in the State Championship against Neville a couple years back. How about yall boys out at Oak Grove? That Defensive Line is unreal. Ridiculous and young lol. Next season yall should win it all with all the returning talent. Kentwood looks unbeatable, but anything could happen from now until the end of the season. I was floored at how big oak grove was across the front and their depth. Hope the big boy who got hurt isnt lost for the season. Im a fan of neither, but what Chick did at Ruston over his tenure was ridiculous when considering what neville was also doing with Brown. Caldwell has Multiple power 5 offers and I was told he committed to Ms state. hale may end of playing power 5 football too and the noseguard has swac offers. So that's three defensive lineman that will all most likely play college. The fourth guy they bring in behind them is huge and athletic too and is like a sopre .And they all will be back besides the nose guard. Offensive line isn't small either but that defensive front is special. They aren't just big guys they are athletic and can move for all being around 300 lbs.

A long, long time ago, I was a line judge/LHSAA official in the Hammond area association. I loved working Amite games with Donald Currier. He was top-notch. My least favorite was Independence with Charles Baglio. His dad would chase me up and down the sideline during the games.

Don Shows.
He took a program that was totally down and out and built it into a consistent state power. And he did it even though he never had a quarterback who could throw a spiral.

I always liked Coach Shows. If it hadn't been for the Sixpack Hex he probably would have lived a happy life.

He loved competition and was uncanny and unhinged in trashing his own team before competing against juggernauts like Thibodeaux. "We dont stand Jim in my eyes. We had a horrible week of practice and the kids think they can just go out there on Friday and wing it". Stuff like that. Master motivator and manipulator. Learned from the best and was one of the best.
