Division IV will be a three horse race for the 2018 football season.
1. Southern Lab
2. Ascension Catholic
3. Lafayette Christian Academy
This is the order I have the 3. Southern Lab is clearly the odds on favorite with arguably the most talent out of any school in the state of Louisiana regardless of classification.
Ascension Catholic brings back pretty much everything from last years team.
LCA brings back a lot from their state championship team.
I think these are the only 3 with a legit shot at a state championship in Division IV, but I am interested to see thoughts and opinions.

I might add Vermilion Catholic to that list. Depends on how their new head coach works out. They were able to split their games against Lafayette Christian last season and came close to beating them in the semi-finals.

I might add Vermilion Catholic to that list. Depends on how their new head coach works out. They were able to split their games against Lafayette Christian last season and came close to beating them in the semi-finals. VCHS lost two All-State players, a DB and WR. Also lost their QB JT Lege, but the younger brother will be a record breaker one day. The current QB, sopre Drew Lege, has a cousin Ethan Lege (pre-season All-State pick), which will stand out on both sides of the ball at WR and DB. Better on defense this year, but will need to prove themselves on the running the ball on offense. They can sling it in the air, which will be difficult to stop. Great coaching staff. They will be fun to watch. I really enjoyed watching them at Quick Slants.

And I never put anything past OCS the way they clobbered us 3 years ago. I think D4 will be closer than everyone is predicting. I’m anxious to see all of these athletes I keep hearing LCA has. Their fan base is talking some noise.

To me it is as simple as this. If lab's coaches have gotten things straight and are even decent this year they win the title goin away. If the new coaches are still struggling like has been mentioned then the top 2-3 contenders can probably pull one out but it still will take a heck of a performance.

Lab has at a minimum of 5-Power 5 guys on the roster plus another handful of D1 and FCS players. Their challenge is at QB(unless they move Thornton) because the returning kid is young and inexperienced. Lab has been shopping for a QB since the Spring but they know folks are keeping a close eye on the program. They will be big up front and fast on defense, the key is finding a QB to get get the ball to guys on the outside (Knox etc). Their kicking game is suspect, but the cover teams make up for it. To beat them, score in 30-40 range and steal possessions from them with turnovers, easier said than done. Coaching staff doesn’t need to be great, talent will make up for it.
Ascension Catholic has 16 seniors and all of their skill guys back. The line will be led by Davis, Matirne and Hilliard, with 2 new starters. Williams and Barber compliment each other well in the backfield and the receivers are capable on the outside. The QB position has some talent, just needs to gain some confidence. The defense is solid and they are very sound w positioning and technique. The kicking game is strong w Blanchard handling both duties. Coaching staff is young, talented and hungry.
LCA has 300 plus kids 9-12, they will be AA for sure next cycle. They have gotten good talent from all over the surrounding parishes. The church is able to absorb the costs and allow kids to enroll. Their facilities are top notch. Clement returns at QB, he has D1 talent. The big running back is back along with speedy slot and outside receivers. Not sure about the o-line, they were OK there last year. Kicking game is good w LaHaye. Defense is fast, very underrated. Linebacker play is really good. They have a dangerous return guy in Ryan. Coaching staff is solid, kids play hard for Trev. The key for them is to have Clement play w no fear, after an injury, players tend to play not to get hurt again. They are very good.
VC, OCS and Cedar Creek will be in the mix, especially VC. Opelousas Catholic will fly under the radar after a disappointing season, but watch out for them, well coached.
Should be an exciting year in D4!

Opelousas Catholic will have a new QB this year as they are changing last years QB to a slot receiver. It’ll be interesting to see how that move plays out. Also SHVP has lost their starting running back for the year due to an ACL tear. He was by far their best player on offense.

Should be an exciting year in D4! Charvis doesn’t want to move to QB. Even though he’s the best option. He played QB his whole life until he got to Lab. I think he’ll end up at QB before the season is over with. And believe me, he can throw it. Lab has a few options at QB though.
