Hey guys! Bill Belichick here. I'm pretty sure I don't have to say it, but boy am I glad that football season is back! I'm going to be doing my weekly Division 4 contenders thread similar to how I did them last season. I had fun doing it, and I thought the feedback and comments were really good as well. So, without further ado, here are Bill Belichick's top 8 contenders in division 4 for the 2018-2019 LHSAA Football Season. For the preseason, I'm going to highlight 4 teams due to the playoff bracket only being a 16 team bracket. If it was a 32 team bracket, I'd probably do a top 8. I'll expand to an 8 team contenders list once the season is underway. Anyways here goes nothing, and as always I love any feedback, comments, or insight that you guys may have on certain teams I have too high, too low, or left off. 1. Southern Lab
As most of you know, this is the most talented team in division 4. They have two of the top ranked prospects in the state of Louisiana as well as in the country in seniors, Kardell Thomas and Tyrion Davis. They also have some really talented guys like Charvis Thornton, Tyler Guidry, Kendarius Moses, Anthony Shaffer, Jaques Wallace, Christopher Welch, and Theodore Knox. The list could go on and on and on. These guys are the real deal in terms of talent. They have 10 of the top 100 on Dandy Don’s Top Football Prospects in Louisiana - Class of 2019. Their non district schedule is brutal. Riverside, U-High, Parkview, and Scotlandville will provide 4 tough tests early on for the Kittens. Don't let the win loss record fool you with these guys. If they get out of those 4 at 2-2 or even 1-3, that's a win for them. Don't look for them to be a top 3 seed in the bracket when it's released because they play the toughest schedule in the state for a 1A program. They are for real though. Coaching will play a huge factor in how far this extremely talented kittens team will go. 2. Lafayette Christian
Lafayette Christian is your defending state champions in division 4 football. The Knights defeated Ascension Catholic 10-0 in a defensive battle last December in the superdome. The LCA Knights bring back a ton of talent as well as the return of senior star QB, Zachary Clement. The Knights also have two other seniors on the top 100 of 2019 list in LB, Martin Lee, and DE, Kalib Watts. The talent doesn't stop there, however, they also have guys like Eroll Rodgers, Sage Ryan, Colin Lahaye, and Logan Gabriel. This is a talented core for the LCA squad that looks to make another run in division 4 before moving up in classification in January when the schools reclassify. The schedule in my opinion is not very tough. Central Catholic may provide a decent test for the Knights, but other than them, the only challenging opponent on their schedule will be the only team who beat them in 2017 which was Vermilion Catholic. I see a 10-0 season for this football team and a likely #1 seed heading into the playoffs. The coaching at LCA is pretty solid. I think they will do a great job of maximizing this teams potential in hopes of returning to the dome to defend their title.
3. Ascension Catholic
Ascension Catholic is your defending state runner up in division 4 football. The Bulldogs lost 10-0 in the state title game to Lafayette Christian after sustaining key injuries both prior and during the state championship game. The bulldogs bring back 8 starters on offense as well as 9 starters on defense. This is a veteran team at Ascension Catholic as all starters are either Seniors or Juniors with a lot of experience. Some of the key players for the bulldogs are Dillion Davis and Jamar Barber who were the only two Ascension Catholic players to crack the top 100 list for 2019. Other talented seniors and juniors include Rodney Blanchard, Tre Medine, Parker Hales, Jai Williams, Eric Simon, and Nick Hilliard. Williams and Hilliard will be among the top 100 in the class of 2020 and Blanchard is a 4 star punter which really helps flip the field position behind a stout defense. The schedule sets up nicely for the bulldogs in 2018 as they will play 7 out of their 10 games at home. The only real tests on paper should be the two district matchups against Southern Lab and Kentwood. Ascension Catholic should be the favorites in all of their other games and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the year they knock off Kentwood. Ascension Catholic looks poised to make another run at the dome. This coaching staff has shown the ability to get the most out of their players.
4. Vermilion Catholic
The Vermilion Catholic Screamin Eagles were the only team to beat the state champion LCA Knights during the 2017-2018 campaign. They went to the semifinals where they had a rematch against LCA and lost on a last second field goal which saw the Knights advance to the dome and the Eagles got sent home packing. The Eagles lost veteran starting QB JT Lege and will be replacing him with younger brother Drew Lege who saw significant playing time for VC last year as his brother dealt with a knee injury. Drew seems poised to have a great year taking over the reigns of the offense's air it out attack. Vermilion Catholic doesn't have any top 100 players in the 2019 class but they are not short on talent. They will be a very good football team that will challenge the best teams in division 4. Their schedule has tough matchups on it with out of district contests against E.D. White and Opelousas Catholic as well as district games vs. Central Catholic and defending champion Lafayette Christian. The eagles are on their 4th coach in 4 years, but Kevin Fouqier is a very experienced coach who should do a great job. OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES:
5. Ouachita Christian
6. Cedar Creek
7. Central Catholic
8. Opelousas Catholic

Bill,
What makes you think my bulldogs will possibly knock off Kentwood. The Roo's are pretty solid from what I'm reading on this forum and we all know that guy named Trey Palmer on their team. Don't mistake me, I think it's a good chance the Dogs upset them. I'm just wondering what your mindset is regarding that.

Kardell Thomas is the #1 ranked offensive guard in the country and Ty Davis is the #14th ranked running back in the country per ESPN. I didn’t realize they were that highly ranked nationally especially by ESPN.

I mean VC beat OCS in a really close game don't act like they were far superior they were about as close as possible. OCS might also be better, they were young last year. That plus the fact that OCS is just ususally a stronger program makes that not a crazy prediction. Its not absurd by any means. OCS had like 7 starters out of their jamboree so don't put to much stock into that either.

Went with a receiver at QB during the playoffs.

Lot of teams have shown interest. Not LSU yet. Yea he went to the Kohl's camps this summer. Check his profile out. 4 Star punter.

The wheather conditions set up perfectly for AC last year, down pour negated every speed advantage we had over a running team. That’s like a kid in the candy store and coming close to getting a piece but the parents says no at the last minute lol. I said myself b4 the game that I didn’t like having to play VC in them conditions

No disrespect to Barber and Williams because they can play, but Blanchard is the most dangerous weapon on that team.

I said myself b4 the game that I didn’t like having to play VC in them conditions Very true sunny

Ascension Catholic and Kentwood have played very close games in back to back seasons. The dogs have them at home rather than under the tower. If there is a year for AC to get it done, its this one. That’s like a kid in the candy store and coming close to getting a piece but the parents says no at the last minute lol. Their speed was negated as well.

Other than my top 4, does anybody feel like or have a detailed description of any of the other teams to look for in Division 4.

Other than my top 4, does anybody feel like or have a detailed description of any of the other teams to look for in Division 4. I don't know that I'd put them in your top 5, but Catholic-PC should be just as good as teams 6-8 on your list. From the Advocate's 1A preview: Catholic-Pointe Coupee
Coach: David Simoneaux (22-12) 2017: 10-2 PROJECTED OFFENSIVE STARTERS *LT Reed Lambert (6-1, 195, Jr.), WR Ethan Elliot (6-0, 150, Sr.), LG Andrew Bonaventure (6-1, 225, So.), *WR Andrew Grezaffi (5-9, 180, Sr.), *C Reed Rivet (5-11, 220, Sr.), QB Aiden Vosburg (6-0, 165, So.), *RB Colin Grezaffi (5-10, 170, Jr.), *RG Omar Aguilar (5-8, 245, Sr.), *WR Nick Carriere (5-10, 174, Jr.), *RT Duncan Fremin (6-0, 200, Sr.), WR Chayse Buriege (5-11, 155, So.), TE Justin Vosburg (5-11, 215, Sr.) PROJECTED DEFENSIVE STARTERS DE Kaleb McDowell (5-11, 195, Sr.), DT Brandon Riddle (5-10, 220, Jr.), *DT Will Dunham (5-8, 255, Jr.), *DE Luke Torres (5-8, 250, Jr.), *LB Nick Carriere (5-10, 170, Jr.), LB Brock Bullara (5-11, 170, Sr.), *LB Aaron Beatty (5-8, 170, Jr.), *CB Micah Cifreo (5-10, 170, Jr.), *FS Matthew Langlois (5-11, 170, So.), SS Colin Grezaffi (5-10, 165, Jr.), *CB Karson Moore (6-0, 155, Sr.) *-- denotes returning starters SEASON FORECAST The Hornets of District 5-1A look to build on last year’s success, but must replace its QB and top rusher from a year ago. Aiden Vosburg takes over at QB and two-year starter Nick Carriere, a WR/LB, is among the players in line to take on more of a leadership role. BIGGEST STRENGTHS A total of 11 returning starters, including six on offense, should service the Hornets well. Those 10 wins from a year ago should also be a huge confidence booster as the CHSPC looks to establish its program as a consistent contender for 5-1A honors and post-season wins.

Raven, you may be right. If I remember correctly, CHPC lost quite a few seniors off of last years team. That is why I left them off. Figured they'd have to rebuild a bit.

I'm just saying lets not act like Ascension Catholic was slow and a downhill running team. They do most of their damage on the perimeter due to their speed.

If I remember correctly OCS was also missing both of their QBs. Went with a receiver at QB during the playoffs. VC played at OCS, I believe it is a 4hr trip. What I understand, OCS is an extremely tough place to play, especially after that trip. Fitzhugh was the QB. Did well at the 1 spot, but VC defense was better. All of which leads to the ranking this year. VC is just better.

Was it pouring or had it rained earlier that day because I know several coaches that say they a wet field can favor a passing team. The WR's and Db's all have to play on it bu at least the Wr's know their spots. Know if was pouring with a lot of wind that is a different story.
