While not your typical regular-season matchup, Merryville needed to fill an open date in their schedule due to University View Academy dropping varsity football. St. John previously had Brusly on the schedule for week 2 but they agreed to allow us to switch when Northlake Christian became available due to False River dropping football. I really don't know what the impetus was for the switch, and I didn't ask. Brusly is growing quickly and they are building a new middle school to keep up with all the new students. It's likely within the next 4-5 years, they could move up to the 4A ranks. From the late 60s through about 2010, St. John vs. Brusly was a big west side rivalry game. The combination of the influx of younger families moving in who may not have ties to the Plaquemine area and the growth of the school leads to fewer people caring about a traditional rivalry and lessens the likelihood that St. John could continue to compete in that rivalry. Similar to the old LSU-Tulane rivalry, it was better when people thought Tulane actually had a chance to win. Anyway, back to Merryville. The Eagles and Panthers have met only once on the gridiron and that was a 2nd round playoff game back in 1976. The Eagles emerged victorious by a score of 3-0. And that's all I really know about that game. I didn't even know the score until 14-0 productions posted all of the playoff brackets on his website. We went on to lose the next week to eventual state champ Hanson Memorial by a 29-28 score. It's about a 3 hour drive from Plaquemine (assuming one were to obey all posted speed limits), so it will definitely be our longest road trip of the regular season. Hopefully we can stay focused and ready play with the same intensity we showed during the jamborees. Let's keep it rolling, guys!

Yes good luck Raven. I graduated from Merryville in 1982 but moved away after college. I still follow them but don’t know a whole lot about the program anymore. Merryville has had some good coaching and some fine athletes along the way. The stadium is named after the famous home town pro Keener Cagle. I haven’t been to a game in 6 years for my class homecoming but it is a nice place to place my last visit. Lot of good people there but beware there will not be a lot of stores or restaurants to visit after the game. Also, there will be speed radars blasting in the small towns along the way so watch the speed inside the city limits. Are you going to the game?

Merryville appears to be similar to us in numbers and size. Could be a good game. Thanks for posting that.

Since 1986 when I started playing, I think I can count the number of St. John games I've missed on one hand. I played from 86-89 then my old coach asked me if I wanted to help keep the stats for the games after I graduated. I started doing that in 1990 and got hooked. I still fuss at my sister for getting married on a Friday during football season. Had to miss the Episcopal game in '95 for that. I was planning to take I-10 to Sulphur, then Hwy 27 thru DeQuincy. Thanks for the warning. I've heard about the small town speed traps on that stretch of I-10 in Jeff Davis and Calcasieu. I plan to leave BR around 2:30, so hopefully we won't be running late by the time we get to that area.

That is definitely the best route to take cause you can roll on the interstate. Not a bad drive from Sulphur but do not miss your turn in Singer or you end up in DeRidder. Watch the gps closely after DeQuincy because that turn is easy to miss. But once you turn in Singer you can probably roll pretty good those last few miles to Merryville. Leaving BR at 2:30 will get you there in plenty of time unless there is a traffic issue on the I10 bridge over Lake Charles. If you hit that at 5:00 could slow you down a bit or even a lot. So if you have a way of checking the traffic you could miss it and save time by taking Hwy 171 off of I 10 and then turning west in Longville which is about 20 miles south of I 10, 14 miles to Singer and then on to Merryville. Just a thought, know you want to be there for kickoff. Many is in Marksville tomorrow night or I would come watch the alumni and hope to meet you.

Thanks spectator! Waze is pretty good for traffic, but hopefully I can be through LC before 5. I'll keep that other route handy in case we get pressed for time.

Maybe it’s another symptom of ? Just saying. 1. It's actually impressive the mental gymnastics it took to take something so far off subject and turn it into your usual /anti-public troll. 2. I know it's a foreign concept to you, but I like to talk about Louisiana football on here. Any subject about Louisiana football really. But i'm not surprised being able to think about more than one topic is out of the norm for you 3. And just for a vocabulary lesson even if I was doing what you said in your post that still would not equal trolling. You should learn what words mean before you use them.

As long as Indy knows he can irritate you he’s going to stay on you. He’s like a shark that senses blood in the water. 😂😂😂😂

SO... Back to football. St. John took down Merryville tonight 33-15. Lots of missed opportunities for the Eagles led to the game being a little closer than the score indicated. Merryville had a decent running game that milked the clock and limited the number of possessions we had. We got 2 scores to start the game and a 3rd score to start the second quarter, but for the rest of the half and into the 4th quarter we shot ourselves in the foot on offense. Overthrown passes killed some drives and Merryville's pass rush may have had something to do with that, but many were on the mark and were simply dropped by the receiver. We gave them a short field with a fumble late in the 1st which led to their first score. They returned the favor in the 4th with a botched punt that gave us the ball inside their 10. That score sealed the win. The Panthers did get a second score with 31 seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late for a team that relies on running the ball and using up clock. It was a good win for the Eagles, and showed us a few things that we need to work on to get ready for Catholic-PC next week. We'll need to be ready. They lost a shootout to Ascension Episcopal tonight 57-54.
