Looks like they spent the entire off season not doing anything about possibly coming up with an offense. They're gonna come all the way over to DFW next week and it's going to get ugly. I'll be surprised if it don't get 2 years ago against Allen ugly.

Is it the coaching? Is it that the kids are not the same type of kids the e has had in the pass? I'm not giving up on them because I know that there is a ton of pride, tradition, and talent there, and i know I'm on the outside looking in, and I could be wrong, but it seems like there is an issue there

Since we moved back to Texas, I just really am out of the loop in regards to ECA. I know our son is still friends with some of the guys on their team and they keep up with each other, but I don't think they compare notes or anything. Plus my son got hurt pretty bad last week in his game, so this week he's been laid up for the most part and hasn't talked to very many people from over there. and really, since his injury, I've been more focused on keeping his spirits up and not talking football a whole lot because I know he's pretty bummed about being out.

Here is my honest assessment regarding the current program at Evangel. We are definitely not the caliber team as we were in the past in regards to coaching, players, and talent. This has been a gradual but steady decline which has occurred for many years. Case in point, our youth programs used to have 3-4 teams per age group in all sports and now we can barely field one team and sometimes that is only because we get a “draft” of players from the league. Currently we field a team of about 55 players down from having 70-80 players in the past. The fact is people are just not sending their kids to Evangel as they have in the past and this has diminished the funding available for coaches and facilities. Coaches in particular have suffered from a lack of funds as many great coaches have left the program for better pay and benefits that public/other private schools can offer. Regarding coaching, if you attend an Evangel game, you may notice that our offense and defense are not sat down with coaches and evaluating what went right/wrong during the previous series with proper adjustments. Examples of our coaching issues is the ridiculous amount of self inflicted penalties we accumulate every game. Last night we had 2 encroachment penalties from our Defense lining up in the neutral zone. This isn’t the offense or snap count drawing us offsides, this is the players inability to realize they are not in proper position. This is from coaching. Another example is a player on the punt team downing the punt that was rolling with speed that could easily get 10 more yards. This player comes to the sideline and not one coach takes him to the side and talks to him. When you watch our offense, you will see that 50% of the time the players are confused about the play and scrambling to get in the proper alignment. Again, this is from coaching because players should be well versed in the playbook. We use at least 2 timeouts a half just due to the inability for our offense to figure out the play that is called. Another coaching issue is play selection, I do not believe Evangel has decided what type of team they want to be...passing/running....and because every week we see a new set of plays and formations out there, I believe our boys are unable to settle in and feel comfortable with the offense. I don’t feel we have horrible coaches and don’t want to give that impression but the fact is they are not the same caliber as we had in the past. I still believe Evangel is a good team....not great team...and that with a recommitment to the program from the community and school, will regain that great status. But until the governing board at the school makes it a priority to increase attendence or get our name out there for others, there will just be a continual decline in our program. Case in point regarding promotion, Skip Fletcher has a morning radio program which features all the local coaches talking about the program and we refuse to participate. In this area you either Love or Hate Evangel but without a decent marketing campaign or utilizing resources such as the previously mentioned radio show to help promote our school/program, nothing will change for the better. Again, this is just a brutally honest assessment and not sugarcoating anything. As for last night, North Little Rock just physically outmatched our defense. But our offense showed some promise. We had a touchdown called back and recovered a fumble from NLR that was overturned because the refs called inadvertent whistle. Overall, the officiating was horrendous as they refused to call the continuous holding of our recievers during their routes. Now do I think we would have won last night....no....because of our inability to slow down their offense. But without the bad calls from the refs, it would have been an even closer game score wise than 35-20. Still, for a school with roughly 55 players going against a 7A state champion, Evangel should not be embarrassed by their performance.

Did you leave your team and pride at home tonight?
I thought you were going to be at the game.
In the first quarter and a half North Little Rock controlled both lines of scrimmages like I have NEVER seen anyone do against Evangel. The last time I saw an offensive line push us around like that was many years ago against John Curtis.
They methodically marched down field the the first three times they had the ball and Evangel never came close to stopping them. They were 2 or 3 deep at every position and I figured by the second half Evangel would be wore out. They were just as good and deep on defense.
It is probably going to surprise you but I thought Evangel played much better offensively than they did last week. They got pushed around on their first drive just like their defensed did, but on the second drive they began moving a little although Shapen was being pressured. They actually scored on a beautiful pass, but it was called back for holding.
On their third drive they are moving the ball well and Shapen is no longer running for his life. They scored to bring the game to 20-7.
Now all of a sudden the defense finally stops NLR and Evangel is on the move again. Most people know that Evagnel fans are pretty complacent and don't make a lot of noise, but on this series the fans were rowdy as the reffs allowed NLR to blatantly pull down receives as they are running their routes. So this series stalls but I am feeling much better about Evangel's offense.
Evangel holds NLR again but there is only about two minutes left till the half. Once again Evangel is showing some offensive punch. I think Evangel could have scored here, yet once again the reffs are allowing NLR to grab and pull the receivers.
This is the end of my observations because I left at half-time. Not because I balled on the team, but because it was almost mid-night and it had been a long working day for me. If those danged Rebels had not stretched the first game into over-time I might could have made it.
Make no mistake, North Little Rock was the superior team. Going into the second quarter I thought Evangel was going to get beat 60-0. I did not see the second half, but based on what I did see, I feel much better about Evangel than I did last week. There is no shame in getting beat by a superior team if you don't quit.

The Second Half wasn’t much different than the first. NLR controlled the ball with long sustained drives. The O-line was far superior to our D-line and their running backs would be 3-4 yards past the line of scrimmage before the first hand touched them. Evangel had a total of 5 offensive plays (including a punt) for the 3rd Q and half of the 4th quarter. NLR moved the ball with run after run chewing up the clock. But when Evangel did go on offense, they took advantage of it. Tamauge Sloan scored on a 60 yard sweep on the second offensive play for Evangel in the 3d quarter and had another big run in the 4th. Shapen was flushed a few times and made some bad passes but overall did a great job and hitting recievers with crisp passes. Would have been better had the refs not allowed NLR to grab our recievers all over the field but that was addressed in the earlier post regarding their ineptitude.
It is hard for me to judge how we will do in District play. I believe we will win district. I don’t believe we will shut out all the teams and they will be closer games. As said previously, Evangel is a very good team but not great. We should do well with the teams in our area but when we play the select teams in the playoffs, that I can’t predict our success given our current situation. Next week vs Duncanville will be another tough game and hopefully no injuries and then we finally play teams in our area. After next week, Evangel should begin to see success on the field again consistently. I doubt any of the teams in this area would do as well vs NLR as we did so our boys can hold their head up with pride for what they accomplished.

Every issue you mention boils down to two things 1) Recruiting is down 2) Head Coach If by recruiting you mean that our governing board needs to reevaluate our marketing plan to increase school enrollment thus increasing the pool of available players that can contribute to our sports teams, I will definitely agree with you. Coach Dawson is a good coach. He understands defenses and how to develop defenders. I do feel that he is not authoritarian or as tough discipline wise as past coaches as we continue to accumulate penalties due to lack of attention and focus which comes from discipline. We have lost a lot of good coaches the past few years, not the least is Coach May who went to Parkway with some of our other coaches. Just wish we had a better retirement plan and able to get John Bachman back LOL. Although I hate myself for saying this, but maybe even Feaster would be a positive coaching move. He may be an but he gets the most out of his programs and wins. Just my thoughts.

Question I ask, overall where’s the talent in the Shreveport/Bossier area? The entire area used to be a hotbed for talent, especially evangel. There’s still some I know and I’m not basing this off college offers only, but overall depth in the area. What’s going on? Are families headed east to Dallas for greener pastures(see what I did there) at a record pace? Is the talent there and not being developed? Is it just young? I guess I just can’t fathom Shreveport being down in talent. Or am I just wrong

So the coaching staff, and sideline practices you describe are significantly different than during their state championship season 2 years ago? The coaching staff does have at least a 50% turnover from that season. As far as sideline practices, I am assuming you mean did they watch film on the sidelines between series and I will admit that I did not see them do that then as well. The difference is our player talent level/athleticism from that team was superior to what we have on the field this year. I am just giving my assessment of this years team based on what I have seen over the years and propose why I think led to a diminish in our student/athlete base. Take it with a grain of salt if you wish.

I got to watch a little bit of film on the ECA game today. They're in trouble. I havent seen enough to count from the rest of 1-5a, but they could very well be 2nd or 3rd in district.
Someone said, on another thread a week or so back, that Evangel should be glad for the split this year.. I don't know at this point, the split may not matter one way or another. Evangel has no offense. This week won't be remotely easier than the last 2 weeks have been, in fact, I'd say this week may very well be much worse. They can't afford to snipe anyone off of defense and put them going both ways against a 5A Texas team. Because they'll just wear out in the 1st quarter.
