I will be attending the Holy Cross vs Jesuit football game this Friday. They say it is one of the oldest rivalries. I'm looking for opinions on that game. Plus name some other "oldest" rivalries.

Hopefully Chalmetteowl can shed some history on the Catholic league on us. I watched something on the League onLBP. It was interesting, rivalries date back to the late 1800’s with the actual league starting in 1950.

Homer/Haynesville rivalry. I believe they have been playing each other every year since 1907.

While not the oldest rivalry, St. John and Ascension Catholic have played 58 times since 1954. Currently, the Bulldogs hold the edge in the series by a 33-25 margin.
The Eagles have also developed minor rivalries with Catholic-PC and Central Catholic over the years. Catholic-PC leads that series 15-11-1, while St. John holds the lead in their games against CCMC with a record of 16-11.
Public school rivals include:
Brusly, 45 games - panthers lead series 27-17-1 East Iberville, 37 games - Eagles lead series 34-3 White Castle, 30 games - Eagles lead series 19-11
We also used to play Livonia quite often before their enrollment exploded to 4A size. Back when they were still 1A and 2A we played them 23 times and hold a 15-8 lead over the Wildcats.

The Covington and St. Paul's rivalry is big here, as the two are separated by about 2 miles. The schools first met in 1936 with this year being the 60th game I believe. The schools did not play from 1975-1996, otherwise the total games would be much higher. I remember stories from when I was a kid that my uncle and others would tell about driving out on the field and doing doughnuts, spraying the field with diesel, and other "pranks", all of which went both ways. Several years ago, there was a controversy over St. Paul's missing a duck that Covington was accused of "ducknapping" it was a real duck that lived on one of the campus ponds. We played there that year and the CHS students wore camouflage and blew duck calls at the game. Good Times! This game is always heated.
Here are a few stats that I'm pretty sure are accurate:
Covington leads the series 35-22-2
Last year – Covington 21, St. Paul’s 20
First meeting was in 1935 – St. Paul’s 19, Covington 7
First Covington win was in 1936 – Covington 37, St. Paul’s 0
Number of shutouts (13) – Covington, 8; St. Paul’s 5
Biggest margin of victory for each – St. Paul’s 48, Covington 6 (2007); Covington 38, St. Paul’s 0, (1943)
Most consecutive wins – St. Paul’s, 9 (2004-12); Covington, 8 (1972-74; 1997-2003); the series between the two schools was suspended from 1975 to 1996.
Most points in a game scored by Covington (44 in 1998, Covington won 44-14)
Most points in a game scored by St. Paul’s (48 in 2007, St. Paul’s won 48-6)

Jonesboro-Hodge and Winnfield have played 91 times. Winnfield is currently winning the series 47-42-2. And here’s a link to a nice article about the history of the rivalry. www.winnfieldtigerfootball.com/id24.html

If I’m not mistaken, Vinton and DeQuincy is the longest standing rivalry in the area. Barbe and Sulphur is probably the best rivalry in that corner of the state. Honerable mention to Elton/Basile, Basile/St. Ed’s, Kinder/Welsh, Leesville/Deridder.

Franklinton and Bogalusa began playing in 1922. Franklinton won its first game in the series in 1926. They played almost every year until WWII when Franklinton did not field a team for a few seasons and didn’t resume playing until 1977. Bogalusa Coach Lewis Murray talked Franklinton into playing a jamboree game before that and they saw they could be competitive and they resumed games in 1977 and have played each season since. Since 1977 Franklinton owns a 23-19 record over Bogalusa and have won the last 18 straight.

Homer/Haynesville rivalry. I believe they have been playing each other every year since 1907. I also believe the Homer and Haynesville game is the oldest continuous rivalry without a missed year of playing. Supposedly Neville and Ruston is the second longest. Other schools in S.La. may have played more times but a time or two the game was cancelled due to weather related issues.

The great Robin Fambrough from The Advocate wrote about this rivalry last year. Denham Springs vs Central. This year will be the 71st year of the rivalry. Denham Springs won last year. Series is now tied 33-33 4.
"The schools also continue the Baton Rouge area’s longest continuous rivalry and will meet for the 70th time. The rivalry dates to 1948 and is as close as it gets. Central leads 33-32-4. The Wildcats average 16.55 points per game, compared to 16.30 for Denham Springs, according to the series records kept by Robert Graves for 43 years."

In the Lafayette area some of the oldest and biggest rivalries are:
Breaux Bridge vs St. Martinville vs Cecilia Lafayette High vs Acadiana STM vs Teurlings, but this one took a long rest. STM vs Northside but this one has become extremely lopsided. STM vs Comeaux see Northside comment. Barbe vs Acadiana vs Sulphur
In Lafayette the big three should play each other every year but do not. That being said, we should see every year: Acadiana vs STM Acadiana vs Teurlings STM vs Teurlings.
While STM and Teurlings will play as long as they are in the same districx, there are other big rivalries that could be developed if allowed to: STM vs Catholic BR Teurlings vs Catholic BR.
It would be great if they could both regularly schedule some of the Catholic league teams on a home on home basis.
STM vs Notre Dame could be a great game, but these two schools look towards each other as assistance rather than rival.

Port Allen - Brusly
Sugarcane Classic
If I'm not mistaken, the series has been ongoing for over 60 years and is pretty much at a deadlock. Regardless of records, this rivalry is always very exciting and they play for the WBR Championship Trophy to be displayed in the winning school's office for the year.

"The schools also continue the Baton Rouge area’s longest continuous rivalry and will meet for the 70th time. Central vs Denham Springs may be the longest CONTINUOUS rivalry in the Baton Rouge area but it certainly is not the oldest or the biggest rivalry. The Baton Rouge High vs Istrouma rivalry is older and by far the bigger rivalry until Baton Rouge High stopped playing football.

When was the last time Baton Rouge and Istrouma played? Because they did not play for 70 years. Central vs Denham Springs has lasted longer and is ongoing.
Baton Rouge High was built in 1926 and has not played football since 1976. That is only 50 years. I attended Istrouma Middle in the early 1990's and it was a magnet school without sports. Many students from Istrouma Middle went to Baton Rouge Magnet High. Istrouma was a football power in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. A large number of Istrouma players ended up living in Central. I hear them talking about their "glory days" at the barber shop all the time. Mr. Gene Lato cuts all the old guys hair.

Homer vs Haynesville is the oldest rivalry in the state having played each other every year since 1907, and twice in 1971 if I’m not mistaken. I’m not sure on the record between but I know Haynesville has a substantial lead. Here’s a picture from 1924. And here is the past games if someone wants to count up the record.
