Two weeks ago there was much talk about Evangel being wounded, and the rest of 1-5A smelling blood in the water. Last week Evangel handed Parkway their first loss 56-20. Tonight Evangel handed Haughton their first loss 49-19, after Haughton had easily defeated Byrd last week.
So after 2 weeks of district play, Evangel is alone at the top with a 2-0 record, and all the sharks are 1-1 in district.
I actually enjoyed watching Haughton on offense tonight. They moved the ball consistently mixing the pass and run, and had Evangel guessing the whole first half. After Evangel pulled out to a 21-7 lead halfway through the second quarter, Haughton scored to make it 21-13 with about 2 minutes left. Then Haughton did a squib kick that bounced away from every Evangel player and was recovered around the Evangel 20. Haughton scored again to make it 21-19.
I have to say I was pretty nervous when Evangel fumbled the second half kick return on their own 30. But Evangel finally began shutting Haughton down and did not allow them to score in the second half, while Evangel added 28 points to their lead.
Next up for Evangel is Airline.

I've got to admit that even I was a little bit skeptical of ECA after 2 games. I knew the game against Duncanville was going to be a loss for ECA and playing it in Texas made it almost a certainty. But really, after the first 2 games, I was starting to think that maybe they were going to have some trouble in district. I underestimated the Eagles. I feel pretty bad about it.

So this thread isn't about Southside or Mentorship?

Don't feel bad about it. Some people don't understand that some teams are rdy to play early and some teams take a minute to get going. If Evangel played Byrd in week one, Byrd would win. Byrd runs the same offense that they ran in the 1950's. So they don't install anything new. Meanwhile, calvary and Evangel change as personnel changes. It's what wins championships. Sometimes it takes a minute to figure out your identity. Byrd knows their identity. It doesn't matter if Drew Brees was their qb, they would run the same frustrating offense and go 7-3 and run into a team that can stop it and then be done.
