Elmo Fernandez is retiring. Now that it is final, I will say that he was a terrible coach. Woodlawn was a power with Kenny Almond. With Elmo at the helm Woodlawn was a laughingstock. Things change in Baton Rouge basketball, but what always was true is that Elmo was not a good coach. At St. Michael or Woodlawn. Woodlawn could be a power next year with a good coach.
Last 9 years his record was 122-140. They won a playoff game in 2019 and 2012 Did not make playoffs in 2009 and 2013- 2017. Lost first round 2010 and 2011.
In 9 years: did not make playoffs in 6 years and were 2-4 in years he made playoffs. That is pitiful for a school in Baton Rouge. Kenny Almond made finals 5 times and won 3 times. Made finals in 2006. Elmo did nothing in 12 years at Woodlawn.

Yes they did. Woodlawn High is a magnet school. This means they essentially don't have a defined attendance area. You need a 2.5 GPA to get in and Basic on LEAP tests. (basic is less than 50% correct on standardized testing.)
It requires actively trying to get talent. 2006 they went to state finals without him. Every year since they have not won more than 1 playoff game. Most years zero playoff wins. His style of coaching did not equate to winning. Essentially wanted to slow down the game, except he always had athletes. The record speaks for itself.
Put Carlos Sample, Jeff Jones, Harvey Adger, Anthony Schiro (all local coaches) and those coaches would have won state titles with Woodlawn.

With how dominant Woodlawn was in the early 2000's, I'm surprised that Coach Elmo lasted as long as he did with the program suffering the way it has. He must have had some sort of personal or political connections that were willing to overlook how average/terrible they have been for the last several years or so. Hopefully they bring someone in to return that program to glory.

He was athletic director.
They hired Brad Voight. Was head coach at Livonia. Did much worse than current coach Toby St. Cyr is doing. Voight might do well, just stating the results.

Elmo was such a bad coach. Kept Woodlawn from winning for at least 10 years.

I wish Kenny Almond would come back. That undefeated team they had was the best team I've ever seen in Louisiana

Second best team for me. Best to me was 1995 st Aug national champion team that was a team. But woodlawn was good. 95 St Aug 98 Woodlawn 96 Glen Oaks But I’ll be hard pressed to find a team better or more enjoyable than 97-98 Parkview Baptist. Also coached by Kenny Almond with an incredible starting 5 of Marquis Ledoux Robert Jupiter Shon Robinson Jermaine Williams Courtney Trask.
