I think it’s just a matter of time until schools are getting closed, which would lead to games getting postponed. Hopefully it’s not going on for too much longer and ruin senior seasons.

All it's going to take is for a few confirmed cases in the schools for full blown mass hysteria. I think we can finish off the basketball season but all bets are off with spring sports.

Wouldn’t surprise me if most schools aren’t going back starting Monday.

No news= good news!

No news= good news! Geez.. I'm not trying to downplay it but the flu has killed over 20k people so far this year and corona has gotten 30. Yet last fall schools like West Monroe didn't shut down until over half their student body (1000 kids) were infected with the flu. It didn't affect any sports. 15 presumptive cases of Corona in Louisiana and schools and sports are going to shut down.

Serious overreactions across the board across the country. Corona is just slightly worse than regular old flu. Majority of the people who have died are the elderly or already sick (just like the regular flu). 75% of those infected world wide are expected to or already have made a full recovery. Mass hysteria caused by the media sensationalizing a strand of the flu that is barely worse than the common cold.

It is about the epidemiology not the severity. It is more than twice as contagious as "the regular flu" with an average carrier infecting 3 more (as opposed to just one more like the flu), with a significantly longer incubation period (meaning you are out there spreading it around for double the time before you have any symptoms). The exponential spreading potential is much worse than the flu. There are currently no antiviral treatments for this virus (unlike the flu). According to epidemiologists (as opposed to HS sports fans lol) it is about "flattening the curve" so to speak so that the number of infected citizens is within the health care system capacity when the outbreak peak occurs. To put it in less abstract terms, it is about preventing "MAN I had a blast at March Madness Grandma" and then 3 weeks later YOU may have a fever and a cough and aches, but Grandma is dead. And her Bridge partner is in the hospital struggling. And 2 of the guys you went with are experiencing similar things. And then the guy that was sitting next to you.. and 15 of the people from the section next to you...etc. etc. The measures aren't being taken to keep individuals from catching the virus per se. It isn't about personal safety, but about slowing the spread to rate that can be managed by the medical infrastructure.

To me that makes no sense. If it's imperative to shut down the sports to prevent the spread, then schools should be a no brainer.

I had a coach tell me last night, he didn't see how they could rationalize having 500+ people in a building for 8+ hours was a better situation than maybe 100 or so people OUTSIDE at a baseball game, limit access to players and umps, but in his mind as long as school was still on, how could they justify canceling sports. I tend to agree. Schools are a well known germ factory, with strep and the flu always rampant in the winter

I understand why all this is going on and I agree with most of the precautions that have been taken. My thing is that people are acting like this is the end of the world and the second coming of The Black Death and that isnt the case. It is much more contagious than regular flu and that is the main problem with this. The elderly, very young, people with weak immune systems, and people with breathing problems are much more likely to have complications and problems with CV. I agree with the measures taken to lessen the spread of a very contagious strand of flu but I do have a problem with making it out to be a world ending, apocalyptic, end of times, four horseman type of contagion.

And a lot of the reaction from the public is treating it like that. The problem is that for people like yourself and Indy, there is no way to prove anything. Should the counter measures be effective, you will think everything was overreaction (which is what it is supposed to look like). Should things still get bad, you will say everything was stupid and useless. The public is reacting to the countermeasures, which are indeed not common in the USA. Also, the public is generally a very ignorant entity, and in these cases many seem to have difficulty distinguishing the difference between stopping the very real exponential spread, and the severity of the virus to various parts of the population.
