Just curious if anyone can give some insight into our NELA baseball scene. I hear alot about Sterlington and OCS. It seems that those 2 programs are loaded for bear and could be favorites to win it all. How about other teams in our area, West Monroe, Neville, Ouachita, etc. Do those teams have any talented players that would be fun to go watch?

West Monroe should be loaded, not sure about Neville. Ouachita has a lot of 4 year starters and could be stout also. Should be fun.

Almost forgot but Ruston is always solid. The Panthers will kickoff tomorrow vs West Monroe in umpires scrimmage.

Ouachita has the potential to be a very solid team. They are senior heavy and have a lot of experience. Most have either started or seen significant playing time since their freshman year. I’m not saying they will make a deep run, but the pieces are there to do something special.

I was able to go out and catch a few innings of the scrimmage at WMHS on Saturday. I believe Sterlington will make a run at a state title, WMHS is going to be loaded. I thought they handled the bats very well and boy is the Pearson kid a special talent. Will have to watch how their pitching goes as each kid only threw 1 inning (20 pitches I think). Watching OPHS, they do have some tools but too early to tell what type of team this will be. Shaw should be their ace and going off past he should be able to control a game. McCullars looks to give them a solid lefty. It is early but they didn't seem to handle the bats very well and you've got to think they will get this going with seeing more pitches. Looks to be a solid year of baseball in NELA if we can keep the Rona away. Good luck to all and I look foward to heading out to several parks to enjoy the game.

I cannot recall the last time OPHS had a strong team offensively. They have the ability to score runs at times, and they have had several solid bats pass through their program over the passed 10 or so years. But, they have never been a team that will hit it all over the park. They relied heavily on having decent enough arms on the mound to win games. Their pitching went down quite a bit after Jake Hammond graduated. It has been several years since they have had multiple arms that were capable of winning tough games. Shaw and McCullars may be the ticket. Defensively, they should be solid. They certainly have experience on their side seeing as how many of their starters have played significant varsity innings since their freshman year.

Sterlington will go to Ouachita Saturday for a 9 inning scrimmage, so we will find out what they look like. We will open the season against them also, so may not show each other a lot as far as pitching is concerned.

Many of the players play or have played on teams together during travel ball. The coaching staffs have always been on friendly terms as well. I doubt that there is much that either team doesn’t already know about one another, so who knows, we might get lucky and get an inning from each team’s #1.

Was able to go out to the Sterlington Sports Complex last night and catch some baseball. OCS vs Parkway and Ouachita vs Sterlington. OCS won and look to be a very solid team that could make a run at another state title. The game of the night though went to OPHS vs Sterlington. Those 2 teams put on a show and boy was it enjoyable to watch solid baseball. Sterlington came out on top 2-1 in 10 innnings
Shaw started for OPHS and went 7 strong innings. Early he was 88-90 and in the 7th was still 85-87. If i remember correctly, he gave up 2 hits and 0 runs. Brewer got the start for the Panthers and was strong through 4 innings. He also did not give up a run and was 86-88. This game was played the right way and boy was the atmosphere great out at the park. It was such a relief to get back to the old normal for a few hours. I am looking forward to catching many more area high schools game this spring. Thank you fellas for providing great entertainment and great baseball.

Too close for my liking. LOL. Ouachita played a great game and Shaw had a great performance. Brewer looked the part but only pitched 50 plus pitches cant wait to see him in shape later in season. Hats off to the Panthers bullpen, Guthrie and Handy came in a had 3 innings each of relief work. Great start to the season!
On another note, OCS looks dominate. They beat a very good Parkway team and made it look easy. Scary good.
