We've all seen bad calls through the years but here's a new one.
Bottom 7 in a game tied 2-2 against Cecilia. Loreauville has baseball loaded. The count is 3-1 on the batter. Pitch comes, umpire doesn't really make a call, runners advance a base, and game should be over. Cecilia coach comes out arguing that ump called a strike. Ump agrees with Cecilia coach that the pitch was a strike. This is irrelevant because if it's a strike then by advancing the runners stole each base and the run still counts. Genius umpire can't understand this basic principle so he sends the runners back to each base. Next pitch, strike 3 and we go to extras. Luckily, it didn't affect the game and Loreauville scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to win. I don't know who's more incompetent, the umpire of the Cecilia coach for actually arguing this call.

I think it’s a genius move by the Cecilia coach to argue the call. He had nothing to lose in the situation. That falls on the umpire. Im pretty sure the Cecilia coach knew the rule, he had nothing to lose and everything to gain by arguing the call. It’s ok for umpires to be terrible though, bc they still get paid and have no consequences for their lack of ability to umpire. Coaches say one thing and they get tossed.

I agree here, right move by the Cecilia coach. Took a gamble and argued and he won the battle even though he lost the war in the end. But by arguing the call he gave his team another chance to win.

Sounds like the ump's inability to make a concise call on the pitch may have led the kids on the field into thinking the game was over by walking in the run. And the ump felt bad so he sent them back? IDK, either way the ump has to do better.

I'm sure they just like football officials. They get paid but they are volunteers. It's not their career. There's no training program or much organization. It's fortunate there's enough of them to cover all the games. Like football there's more teams than ever before.

Actually they do have consequences. If it is brought to the board of the area Umpire's association or RCO(formerly known as assignment secretary) But as for sending the runners back - After the pitch did anyone ask for time for clarification - because that could have been granted - which indeed would send the runners back. In the hoopla of the apparent winning run coming in "TIME" may not have been heard by many. Or his verbal call of strike was muffled by people cheering because they thought it was ball FOUR and game was over and his hand signaling of STRIKE was obstructed depending on where you were sitting. Lots of different scenarios. Also there are some nuances to the rule if the strike called was delayed too long or misread by the defense... but let me look into that.

In the hoopla of the apparent winning run coming in "TIME" may not have been heard by many. Hmm... Football officials start meeting weekly in early july and in mid to late july start having saturday morning on the field training sessions. Some associations and some crews watch and dissect a lot of hudl clips of their games. baseball umpires start meeting in january - sometimes twice a week discussing rules, situations, mechanics and videos of the aforementioned. At least that's how it's been in any of the local associations I have been involved with. With that being said, this year is a little taxing on some due to most local associations being down in membership of active officials by 20-35% many if not all are spread pretty thin and working more games than they are used to - often times taking additional time away from their day jobs to the point of where they are losing money by officiating some of the "extra" games so that the kids actually get to PLAY those games. Several games statewide have been nixed this year due to not being able to get umpires - or having to play with ONE umpire. When it comes down to it, if an umpire or football official attends all of the meetings and training days(which I do unless I have a game conflicting) they actually spend more time in meetings and training than officiating games.

After looking at rule book and case book. Rule 10.2.3H allows for runners tagged out that put themselves in jeopardy as the result of a miscommunication of a call - can be reversed in most cases. Runners scoring on such cannot. The only plausible explanation was that someone called time.

As a coach, I wish that we could grade the officials. We could tie their pay to their grade. This would force them to work on their craft. It gets old having them show up just for their check.

Paper probably doesn’t make it back to the man in charge and nothing would still happen bc you don’t have enough umpires to suspend anyone from games or take their pay.

The head of the association gets the reports. Had a blown call a few years ago against Breaux Bridge that a rec league umpire would get right. A few days later there was a conference call between head guy, the ump, and our coach to talk it over. Don't remember if the umpire was penalized but there was a discussion to learn from the situation.

The penalty isn't suspension, but rather less than desirable assignments. For most umpires, you're looking to call good baseball. No one wants to sit through a 17-14 7 inning game where neither team can find an out. If you mess up on a regular basis, those are the type of games you are assigned.
