The Southland Conference has invited Division II powerhouse Texas A&M-Commerce to join the conference. The Lions will officially join the Southland on July 1, 2022 and will begin a 4-year transition into FCS starting at that time. This is a good addition for the SLC. They said they wanted to add current D1 teams but there was no way that was going to happen.

The Southland has said in the past they wanted to lure current D1 schools to join to supplement the losses to the WAC and ASUN but that's just not logical anymore. Texas Southern was rumored to be interested but the SWAC has stabilized and is growing with the resurgence in general of HBCU pride. Adding D2 schools or having non-football schools start a program and join are the only options. Here are some D2 schools the SLC should consider. West Florida will not be listed since UWF has already turned down the SLC.
