Per KPLC and McNeese State officials, The Cowboys are leaving the Southland Conference and plans to join the WAC with plans to move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision, this move would reunite MSU with former Southland foes, Lamar, ACU, SFA, and Sam Houston State.
Hopefully this can result in McNeese and UL playing on a regular basis again!
Thoughts?

I worry that should the CFP expand, and ESPN decides to quit funding the bowl system (ESPN essentially funds the entire bowl system) the schools overextending themselves will be hurting.

They will need to at least double their athletic budget if they go to the WAC for all sports. Just to compare budgets from McNeese and UL. Football schools are close but baseball is schools from California, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and all the way through Lake Charles. The diamond sports travel could put a major dent in the football budget. Overall BudgetMcNeese: $12M Louisiana: $33.8M Football BudgetMcNeese: $3.47M Louisiana: $11M Baseball BudgetMcNeese: $894K Louisiana: $2.18M Softball BudgetMcNeese: $655K Louisiana: $1.87M Men's Basketball BudgetMcNeese: $1.12M Louisiana: $2.78M Women's Basketball BudgetMcNeese: $773K Louisiana: $1.6M

So technically, MSU could have to use funds to subsidize those unsold tickets to meet that requirement.

We have never consistently drawn those kind of crowds at McNeese and if you have been to a game in the last few years, you know that things are certainly NOT trending in that direction. From a financial standpoint, the well seems to be running dry for the few big money backers that we have been able to count on in the past. Our staff has lost its local ties and its recruiting footprint. This moves seems to be coming at the worst possible time and seems like a very obvious bad move. I can only hope that those steering the ship know something that I am not privy to.

Official not going to happen…yet. I am interested in the thought process behind all of this. As I mentioned, my worry is that these schools looking to jump up to FBS are going to get caught with their financial pants down should the bowl system vaporize in a few years. Right now the only thing keeping it afloat is ESPN. Should the CFP expand- it will likely be the end of the bowl system, as taking the top 8-12-16 teams will even further devalue the remaining bowl games. Fans often don't understand what a bowl game actually entails. It is NOT just the bowl site. New Orleans has fared worse since the advent of the CFP because attendance is lower (when it is a semifinal site), length of stay is lower, visitor expenses are lower (because they have to budget for multiple trips)

Good move by McNeese to stick with the Southland. They are not ready to be a FBS program

Good move by McNeese to stick with the Southland. They are not ready to be a FBS program In reading the MSU press release- it seems if their exploration of options may have been a bit of leverage play. The Southland Conference has awarded MSU numerous championship hosting opportunity contracts as well as Football Media day for several years The release doesn’t specifically mention if these opportunities were already scheduled or would likely have been available to MSU had they not explored leaving.

I think your assertation is 100% correct. In hindsight, it was likely a bluff all along and it payed off for McNeese. Now lets focus on getting back to contention in the Southland Conference!
