Uno has done this before. I actually think they should go the opposite way, and compete below the Division I level.

I remember when I was in high school they left the Sun Belt with the intention of dropping down to Division III, where they would join LCU's old conference the ASC and field a football program. They were in Division III for one year and then went back to D1 and joined the Southland. I think you may be right, I think they may be better off competing in Division II. Honestly a few of our FCS level schools in this state would probably be better off in D2 and I know ULM would be better off in FCS

Honestly a few of our FCS level schools in this state would probably be better off in D2 and I know ULM would be better off in FCS There was absolutely a period of 3 or 4 years where they were a visionless and rudderless athletic program- with the board having voted 11-1 to drop into DIII and withdrawing from the SunBelt conference in 2009, but not joining any DIII leagues and playing a hodgepodge independent schedule (with many DIII teams) , then announcing almost 2 years later it would explore DII (and joining the Gulf South Conference) and then a year after that firmly declare itself a DI program and joining the Southland. I don't know if UNO officially was a DIII program, as their baseball team played a great deal of DI teams, but the athletic program certainly was not on firm footing at the time.
