Has Spring Practice become a thing of the past for most schools? I know that you get an extra week or extra days of some kind if you don't have Spring ball but it seems like a valuable time to assess what you have coming back for a lot of teams. Is the extra week worth it in August when it's 102 degrees? I have heard of ASH scrimmaging Northwood of Shreveport and also that ASH is having an intersquad scrimmage another day. I've also heard that Pineville is having a scrimmage but not sure if it's between themselves or if there is an opponent. Other than that I've heard nothing about Spring practice anywhere in Central Louisiana by anyone. It's still a staple for the large schools in the Lafayette area.

For some teams, if key players are tied up in track and/or baseball, the extra week in the fall may be worth more than 10 practices in the spring without their best guys. ASH is having an intrasquad scrimmage on May 10 and playing at Northwood-Shreve on May 17. Bunkie is playing at Kaplan on May 15. Marksville is playing at Menard on May 17. That's all I've seen so far.

Is Neville doing a spring football game? West Monroe, Neville and Ouachita Parish are pretty much always doing spring and spring games, but haven't heard anything this year.

I won't make any practices. I usually call a handful of Lafayette area coaches and get their reaction to the spring for the newspaper. Hoping that comes to fruition again. I'm especially interested in your facts/opinions on St. Thomas More, Teurlings Catholic, Carencro, Southside, Lafayette Renaissance, Lafayette Christian, Opelousas, Cecilia, Northwest, Acadiana and Westgate. STM - graduated a ton, two great CBs return TC - Travis Gallien intrigues me, what's the status of the athletic program? Carencro - new coach & Chantz Babineaux Southside - new coach, new QB. alot hinges on the QB in the flexbone offense LRCA - new kid on the block LCA - what do the overall numbers look like? Opelousas - Malveaux is a championship sprinter at QB Cecilia - will they move B. Calais to QB & Diesel to RB? Acadiana - one of the most consistent programs statewide Northwest - can they repeat the success without J. Reese? Was impressed with their football players on the basketball team Westgate - where should they be ranked overall? almost beat Ruston with Jaboree Antoine in his first game back on the field in several weeks. Will he play QB this year? Great work, brother Clean. We all appreciate your work. Personally, I enjoy reading your articles, immensely.

Haynesville played Northwood tonight. During the scripted plays, Northwood’s 1’s scored on both of their possessions. Haynesville’s 1’s scored once on their 2 possessions and had a couple of picks. Both teams looked solid in my opinion. Northwood ran hurry up no huddle pretty much the entire scrimmage that had our guys gassed. Their offense looked to be in midseason form. Receiver screens looked good and did a good job hitting receivers downfield. Running game had a lot of success also.
Haynesville’s offense didn’t look too bad. Northwood was the better team, but I thought we did some good things on offense. Hit on some deep balls and had some solid runs around the end. Northwood’s defense did a good job of bottling up our run game for the most part. I feel like we’ll be fine on the offensive side of the ball. We have a handful of good skill players that are proven. On defense, we need to get bigger and stronger on the interior. During the live quarter, Northwood was able to gash us up the middle pretty easy. Our entire team was out of gas by the time the live quarter rolled around. Northwood won that portion 17-7. I feel like If we shore up the interior of the defense and have a couple of guys step up and hit the weight room this summer, Haynesville will make another deep run. We certainly have the talent at the skill positions.

I'm curious about the Opelousas/Acadiana scrimmage. When is that? I'm wondering how they operate without their old coach at practice and on the sidelines. Will there be a let down in intensity and focus with him gone?
Also, the weather may be a big factor in whether anyone gets to play today all around the state.

I wonder how Ruston is looking this spring. Baugh had a great senior class, and they were able to get a state championship. It’s going to be tough replacing 2 power 5 d-lineman, a three time all state first team middle line backer, and a three year starter at safety in Nate Johnson. This maybe Baugh’s toughest year coaching at Ruston. You just don’t find 2 power 5 defensive ends walking the halls, and a Linebacker that attacks like Ray Lewis! That district this year is going to be tough with Neville being added and it looks like West Monroe is finding its groove. Alexandria is loaded as well.

Ruston scrimmaged Captain Shreve last night with several key players sitting out. Neither Brantley or Hudson dressed out. Hayes was limited in his action. Ruston won the timed portion 7-0.
Defensively, Ruston looks just as good this year as last year. I know, that is hard to believe, but it’s true. While it was only a scrimmage, they had kids flying around to the ball all night. The DL spent a lot of time in the backfield. I thought the DL was the strength of the defense last night.
Hard to tell what the offense will look like when your three biggest weapons are not playing. I suspect they will run the ball pretty well again this year. The TE caught a long pass from the backup QB, who is a Freshman. He will be a sopre next year but looks really good running the offense. They could win ball games with him under center if it came to that.
As for next season, we open with Acadiana. Will follow that with four straight out of state games. We have Cabot, Arkansas at home before heading to Texas for three straight weeks. We follow that up with a road game to Ouachita. Going to be a very tough stretch of games. But then again, Bearcat fans have come to expect nothing less.
Going to be a long, hot summer waiting for the season to kickoff.

I heard EA has an 8th grader who has a 1.49 GPA. During timeouts he gave the players water…Cecilia has requested an investigation.
