A few interesting games this week, starting with:
Ascension Catholic @ Kentwood
Definitely the game of the week in 6-1A and for more than a few 1A and Division 4 fans around the state. Both teams come in at 7-1 and near the top of their respective power point charts. I think the difference in this week's game will be Kentwood's schedule. They Roos are battle-tested and know they can go toe-to-toe against teams with both power and speed. While the Bulldogs have been winning big, they were truly tested only once. That's not to say I don't think ACHS is capable of winning, because they certainly are. But in a close game, as I suspect this one will be, sometimes it's just a matter having that big game experience that makes enough of a difference.
Ascension Catholic 28
Kentwood 30
Ascension Christian vs Ville Platte
As far as I know, this may be the first meeting between the Lions and the Bulldogs of Evangeline parish. CrusadingLion should be able to tell us if I am incorrect. After a string of 4 straight wins (5 if you count the JV team from KIPP-BTW last week) the Lions appear to be on a quite a roll. Ville Platte has a couple of nice wins this season, and nearly knocked off a solid Lake Arthur team in week 6. Ordinarily I would pick the Bulldogs, but I think the Lion's winning momentum might carry then through this week.
Ville Platte 22
Ascension Christian 24
White Castle @ Southern Lab
The one game this week that should not be close. The Bulldogs have the speed, but they don't have the size to slow down the Kittens for long.
White Castle 8
Southern Lab 48
East Iberville @ St. John
The Eagles have improved in the weeks following the Southern Lab debacle. The underclassmen who were thrust into the starting lineup to fill in for injured senior starters have gained valuable experience with game-time reps that simply cannot be duplicated in practice. They finally showed the ability to stop someone in the 4th quarter, even if it was back-up players, in the game last week vs Kentwood. They also showed they weren't going to quit when they were down 40-0. I think that will carry over to this week's game against the Tigers. East Iberville started off the season with 3 straight wins over outmanned opponents, but were quickly brought back to reality when they hit district play. Should be a good one by both teams looking to stay out of last place in district.
East Iberville 20
St. John 35
Now I know what some of you are thinking, Raven has lost his mind. That St. John defense hasn't stopped anyone from scoring 40 points all season. And while that is true, I think this week will be different. I also think we keep better control of the ball this week and not turn it over in crucial situations. What makes me think this? I don't know. Nothing concrete, just a feeling. Get'em Eagles!
