Another football season is upon us and another round of opening night games will be played this week. District 6-1A again features teams that could contend for state titles in both 1A and D4. Those teams matching up against each other later this season will surely be much anticipated.
On to week 1:
Ascension Catholic vs Mentorship Academy The Bulldogs had no problem taking down the Sharks in last season's opener and should not have any difficulty this year either. Coach Trosclair gets the Dogs off to a fast start.
ACHS 58 Mentorship 0
Ascension Christian vs Springfield Springfield handled the Lions relatively easily last season, but ACS hit their stride late and won a few games. I think Springfield still wins this one, but the score should be a little closer.
ACS 12 Springfield 24
East Iberville @ Slaughter Charter Coach LeJeune has the the Tigers going in the right direction and with about 40 kids on the team he's got a lot more to work with than in previous years. The Knights of Slaughter have shown steady improvement under 3rd year head coach Devyn Baker, but the Tigers take another one this year.
EIHS 28 Slaughter Charter 12
Kentwood vs Loranger The Wolves scored a mild upset over Kentwood to start last season, and don't think the Roos have forgotten that. Kentwood is at home under the tank, which is always good for an extra score.
Kentwood 26 Loranger 14
Southern Lab vs Riverside Much has been said of the Kitten's desire for payback after the Rebels took advantage of a team in complete disarray last season and handed Lab one the worst losses in recent program history. The game is at A.W. Mumford Stadium. Riverside is rebuilding. Lab is stacked with talent.
Southern Lab 42 Riverside 14
St. John @ Ridgewood Prep After False River dropped it's varsity football program, St. John scrambled to find a week one replacement for the the Gators. Along comes the Ridgewood Golden Eagles from Metairie. Neither team has won a regular season game since 2015. Ridgewood will need to wait a little longer.
St. John 48 Ridgewood 6
White Castle vs Belaire The Bulldogs lost a close one to the 5A Bengals last season. The game is in White Castle this season so they may get some assistance from the White Castle Air Force, but I see another close loss in the Bulldog future.
White Castle 22 Belaire 26

Man. Y’all keep predicting a blowout in our game versus Riverside. I just don’t think it’ll be that lopsided. But I’m glad you’re back doing the 6-1A predictions again. Great job as always Raven 💪

On another note, I think ACHS could score 100 this week if they tried.

You're right about the possibility of the Riverside game being closer than everyone predicts. They're not exactly a bunch of scrubs. I think there's just a general feeling that Lab is baiting the trap. Maybe the hammer didn't come down on Amite last week in an attempt to lure Riverside into feeling overconfident? You did mention Coach Asberry rotating in back-ups even while the game was still undecided. Maybe he was also not wanting to show too much in a jamboree that doesn't count anyway.
Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I do think that the Rebels are going to be quite surprised by the Kitten team that shows up Friday night. They won't be anything like they remember from last season.

Excited to see the St. John offense this week after an explosive out put last week in the jamboree. Like the way the program is headed under coach Holden.

I have to keep reminding myself last week was just a jamboree, so don't get too excited. However, they are an order of magnitude better on both sides of the ball than they were at this point last season. Ridgewood will be good as both a confidence booster and real game experience. They've only run this offense in a scrimmage and a jamboree that was about 1/2 a game long. Merryville next week will test their mental preparation as they'll have a long road trip to go through. They'll be tougher for the Eagles than Ridgewood, but still should be a winnable game if they keep their focus. The first real test will be Catholic-PC in week 3. Then we should have a better idea of how we match up against playoff-caliber teams. It does look like it's going to be a fun season though.

My bad roopride. LHSAA website schedules show the game in Kentwood, but Maxpreps says it's in Loranger. Looks like the LHSAA really doesn't know what's going on.

Total faith in Lab destroying the rebels. I'm also glad to see St. John will probably field a better team this year compared to last year. Goodluck to those guys and coaching staff.

Great job as always.
Springfield will be a tough test for us. Definite advantage in the trenches for Springfield. Going to be a good measuring stick to see where we are as we look to step back into district play next year.
Best of luck to everyone.

Only thing they really have on us is numbers, last year cramps hit our players hard, so hopefully coaches have them a little better conditioned for this early season matchup
