My hope is that by April 13, they will let the baseball/ softball season resume. I guess our officials have to follow the lead of everyone else but these professional athletes are getting a paid vacation and the ncaa could always allow an extra year of elligiblity.
For 99% of these high school seniors this will be the last time they ever pick up a ball.
For me personally, the last three years of Winnfield baseball has been the most exciting and best baseball the school has ever played. Sure, we never made it to Sulphur but two quarterfinals in a row and playing and beating some of the best teams in the state has really been a joy to watch. Six seniors on the team this year have started since they were freshman and this was their last go at it. Hate to see their careers end like this.

Yeah this is the only downside to this really is the seniors possibly losing their last season. I like the move to close the schools tho. Although most younger people will be able to survive the virus, they could still carry it and pass it on to others, including their grandparents. Think it’s best to be safe for now since we don’t know much. Don’t want to turn out like Italy and have hundreds die in a day.

I honestly don't see this April 13th date sticking. We are just beginning. If it is too dangerous now to go to school, then in 4 weeks it will be twice as dangerous.
Only way this goes away in 4 weeks is if every single American stays in their home for the next 4 weeks and never goes outside.

Shut down schools and large gatherings but CASINO'S are good to go! But don't be a bingo hall raising money for charitable causes because you're specifically mentioned in the executive order and shut down!

But don't be a bingo hall raising money for charitable causes because you're specifically mentioned in the executive order and shut down! Casino's are like Walmart and other private businesses- you can choose to go into them and catch whatever you want or avoid them to stay virus free, whereas public institutions, and those subsidiary businesses to them, you can't chose to stay out of them those increasing chance of exposure. I promise you if I could have choose to avoid school without consequences under the pretense of I was trying to avoid the "flus", I would have.

Mostly elderly people, those with pre-existing conditions, and very young die from the flu. You are right, those deaths are tragic and we do not pay attention to them. However, the flu is not normally a large danger because, relatively speaking, very few people get it. If we do not take precautions, estimates are that 40-70% of our country could contract the coronavirus. It currently is showing a mortality rate of 3.5 %. The normal seasonal flu is 0.1%. Because you cannot have immunity and there is no vaccine, people are much more likely to contract COVID-19 and much more likely to die. You are right, that the majority will ultimately be fine. However, if it gets widespread, we could see deaths in the 100s of thousands. The other major issue is that our health care facilities get overwhelmed like Italy and other places. Not only does this put those with severe cases of the virus in greater jeopardy, but many will not be able to get their cancer treatment or whatever they need to survive.

Only way this goes away in 4 weeks is if every single American stays in their home for the next 4 weeks and never goes outside. The issue is that it is not about eliminating the virus, but rather just flattening the curve of the peak outbreak. The spread is an exponential curve...if these measures work, then it should look like an absolutely massive over reaction. That is success. Saying "in four weeks, it will be twice as dangerous" is making the assumption that the measures failed.

In your opinion, if school resumes April 13 do you think spring sports will also resume? I would think only if they extend the school year. Would they have the Championships without completing District play? Its really hard to say. The current end of Baseball regular season is 4/25, that's only 11 days. That probably isn't even enough time to play every team one time in the big districts. Remember, there are pitching rules.
Softball end of regular season is April 14th.

I agree. I would hope some type of sport activities will resume, but I think the chances of the seasons just playing out like planned is unlikely.

Yes. Look up when the Texas 6A baseball finals are. Obviously something else that helps in this type of situation is that districts have gone from playing each other twice to playing only once. In the worst case scenario, and we’re lucky we scheduled this in 8-5A, we have an three date tournament at the end of the season if we need to determine a state playoff qualifier. No regular season extension needed

Pretty simple, they apparently play high school baseball after school is no longer in session. so why can’t we? Many logistical hurdles, but that was the first thing that jumped into my mind as well. It won't be perfect as smaller, rural schools or schools with lots of busriders may have issues and there will be conflict with American Legion or other summer baseball activities as well as just other summer activities in general, but it seems like a viable option as opposed to just cancelling in my eyes.

Wouldn't necessarily have to extend the school year. Extend the regular season for softball and baseball and make the baseball playoffs single elimination all the way thru for all classes. its already 1 and done for softball. With 1 and done they could get thru 2 rounds per week. Extend the regular season a week and have them start District play immediately. Or have Districts play a tournament to determine their Champs instead of playing a full schedule. District 4-2A and the Baton Rouge 2A district were already going to do that anyway. There are ways to still have a season but will they actually decide to let the kids play is the question. They have a month to plan for it.

Push state tournament or title game back two weeks. Give teams 18 days or so to get in their district games and any others they wish. Play 5 days a week u could get in a dozen games or so before playoffs.

Play with limited fans give each team 50 tickets there are ways to play and still be safe. Give a couple weeks and hopefully have a good game plan.

Anybody else hearing this? LHSAA left it up to the school districts. Vermilion shut most of it down Friday. Some teams were allowed to play but couldn’t travel together or go on campus to get things. Know some other parishes shut everything down also. Iberia schools played this weekend but still waiting on word to see if practice can continue on school property.

Yes we played a double header with North Desoto on Saturday to finish off our tournament because the other two teams were not allowed to travel after Friday. The plan was for us to continue to practice but it looks like even that has been shut down.

Even if you have to play into late June I would imagine most people will be fine with that. Just a sad situation for seniors. In college they are getting another year. But in highschool that is it for them hopefully this thing is under control in a few weeks

Has anybody heard anything regarding practice during the break? I’ve heard two different stories, one is it was left up to school superintendent, other was all school superintendents voted to not practice for the next month.
Anybody know the real story?
