Each general session there are thousands of bills introduced. Many much like the stupidity in this one. I'd like to see a bill placed into law whereby if a bill is introduced and does not pass the authors of the bill get a deduction in perdiem proportionate to the percentage it was defeated by. I bet then they would think twice about how ignorant they are.

You read this stuff and go WOW. I support LSU, it is the states flagship university, but LSU fans always wonder why ULL fans don't support LSU like other school fans do. Now you know. So we are going to tell the MAJORITY of college students in this state, that their sports team cannot travel to play. If this bill passes and becomes law, it will force the closure of EVERY university sports program in the state except LSU. Even NIAA and Div 3 schools must travel father than 380 miles to play. I will also submit that just having this brought up, will change the following of many of the UL system and Southern System schools and fans about supporting LSU athletics. One thing for sure, when you meet a ULL fan dressed in vermillion and white, the chances are that he went to and more than likely graduate from ULL. When you meet an LSU fan, all you can be assured of, is that he went to Walmart or Academy,Or S!!!!!! LOL..... Walmart!!!! right?

I would also think this in various ways would violate Title 9.

So the legislature is trying to take over ANOTHER sporting classification? That sounds logical. They have all the answers. Ask Rick Talbot

The only reason they don't/can't restrict LSU's travel is because LSU is the only school in the state that generates enough money to pay its own athletic budget. They don't receive state funds for athletic purposes. In fact the athletic department gives money to the school every year. I'm not saying I agree with the bill. Just giving a reason why LSU was excluded.

All this is, is a slap back at the sitting Governor in response to the Governors Statewide broadcasted speech, threating college football in the Louisiana. Even though, in his speech, he did not specify LSU, most people took it as that is what he meant.

Some school's individual sport programs do make money, but not their school's athletic department as a whole.

I would think that in order to be in any NCAA athletic conference that is an all or nothing. You can't say I will be in the SWAC or whatever for Football and Basketball, but not Baseball, Softball, Tennis, etc.....
So in effect, this would destroy the Football and Basketball programs as well right?

Athletic Director of his lack of intelligence, for there are contractual obligations that are ongoing that if broken would end up costing these institutions potentially for greater amounts of money. Is it just me, but if they are even going to entertain such stupidity in nickel and diming this issue why haven't they started with their own financial benefits. Then add to how much each of these institutions will lose in support across the board from alumni, sponsors and just the exposure. Personally, I think this has more to do with how many schools across the state in all sports except for football have made up the gap in their competitiveness in relation to LSU and those like Rep. Carter can't seem to handle that. It reminds me how LSU couldn't handle being 2nd to then USL in computer science.

The state could start its own conference and all the schools except LSU would compete and the Governor could assign someone to run the whole show so no college in the state would have to cross the state line. LSU would have to play all of their con- conference games against in-state schools save on money (LSU could pay the travel cost) Sounds like this may be the next bill up for discussion.

The sunbelt has several schools, so does the mountain west. Both are seeking to find new schools that are full participants to replace the football only and basketball only schools.

Here is the really suspicious part of this bill, it was introduced just days after ULL released the findings from a consultant, (University of Missouri's ex athletic director who helped Mizzou move to the SEC) recommended that ULL look for an association with a major football conference. His plan gave steps to make the athletic department more independent from general funding.

I need to look at UNO's all sports schedules and determine how many trips they went on that this bill would stop. This is looking out for the taxpayers, who fund these non revenue sports out of student fees and direct institutional support. We can't be cutting funds to our universities left and right and ignore sports like they aren't supposed to be cut. It's not a good look

At ULL, the students voted to self fund athletics through an assessment, so there is no need to restrict travel. Naturally, schools will cut athletics if they cannot fund them. UNO does not have a football team, Southeastern stopped football and then started it back up due to budget concerns. Why is there a need to force the end of athletics at every school except LSU? Part of the problem with higher ed, is the shear number of public institutions offering 4 year degrees and duplication of schools. We have more 4 year universities in Louisiana with 4 million in population than Florida with 10 million in population and as many as Texas. Time to restructure all the university systems and limiting the number of D1 schools the state maintains. We should have no more than 3 D1 FBS schools and 3 D1 FCS schools. All others should drop to D2 and some to D3.
