Our 8-5A district in baseball this year adopted a unique format that I'm not sure has been seen in a while in Louisiana.
We play one round of district (a big one, 9 teams so 8 games), with the top 4 teams playing in a tournament to decide the district champion this weekend.
I like this format for all teams. My Owls are #18 in the most recent power ratings, so we look like we should be in the playoffs either way, but it gives a one game shot to either #49 Ehret or #56 East Jefferson where before in a normal schedule they wouldn't have that shot. The championship will be at Ehret (barring an upset), because they pulled one in the regular season, so they get an unexpected gate.
Has any other district done this recently?

I've heard of some 1 game "playoff" to decide. BTW, these games do not count towards PR if anybody was curious. At least they are not supposed to.

That deadline was yesterday.

The main problem with this format means that a team that has worked all year and has done everything it needs to do to get in the playoffs will not because a team has a good weekend. Sounds like the conference basketball tournaments in the NCAA. The playoffs need to go back to the old formula from the pre-power point system. All classifications should go to 8 districts 7-8 teams per district, with the first and second place teams in the playoffs 16 teams total ( 32 teams waters down the playoffs). Each district desides there 2 repesentatives however they want ( in case of a tie). Make the district title mean something again, all district champs get a first round home game, under the power point system now a third or fourth place team in district could get a home game over a first place team.

If Ehret was the number 1 seed in the tournament wouldn't they have an automatic bid for finishing first place in the district?

Ehret beat us 3-1 in the championship game to win the automatic bid... we were the 2 seed but would have won the automatic bid if we won. we didn't need the automatic bid anyway since we're #19 in the PR. Ehret is the second highest at #49. the rest of the district is 53, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, and 63.
btw the Ehret win knocks out #32 Holy Cross, so it was fine with us lol
i'm thinking outside the box here, but we could have declared our regular season winner and tournament winner (if it were two different teams) as "tied" to the LHSAA and they'd both automatically qualify. i don't know if they check up on stuff like that
