I haven’t watched any basketball this school year, but at the current time who do you guys consider to be the 5A State Champs in select and non select for boys and girls? Let’s get it started!

I would add Ruston and New Iberia to that group as well. Maybe Natch Central as a dark horse.

Let’s get it started! zachary and Ponchatoula What does Zachary have returning? I know they were unable to participate in last year’s playoffs due to the incident last year. Is the Green kid playing for them it his year? I remembered last year that Zachary was the 2 time defending state champs before last year. So I know they’re coming back with something to prove.

DS is benefiting from a weak schedule. If the top 6 stay the same, and I think they will, I would predict the final four to look like this.
Semifinals 1. Zachary 4. Ponchatoulas
2. New Iberia 6. Ruston
Finals 1. Zachary 6. Ruston
I think these are the four best teams in 5A, and I don’t think it’s really that close. I could see any of those four teams winning the championship this year. New Iberia plays such tough defense. Zachary could be playing for a fourth straight championship if they weren’t kicked out of the playoffs last year. Ponchatoulas is the defending champions. And Ruston has almost everyone back from last year, and have added freshman sensation 6’7” Ahmad Hudson. All four teams have a chance this year.

Watched New Iberia play Catholic NI last night in the Cajun dome. Offensively they can shoot it around the perimeter, and take more mid range 2s than I’ve seen out of any team in a while. 5 Austin Delahoussaye and 0 Wayne Randall-Bashay are serious players. Came away from that game though thinking they either need to make some adjustments, or Catholic NI is better than anyone realizes. NISH was outplayed for most of the game and Catholic simply gave it away late.

Good assessment of NISH. From the scores, it appears as though they play tough defense. That was the case last year as well. Is that still the case?

Good assessment of NISH. From the scores, it appears as though they play tough defense. That was the case last year as well. Is that still the case? The first half was not what I expected from them. They started slow offensively and seemed a little lazy defensively. The second half they completely flipped the script though, and played outstanding perimeter defense. They suffocated our guys 30 ft from the bucket in the second half and forced them into sloppy turnovers.

They were 2-6 before the football players made it back. The only loss is the a very good Wossman team, the second game they were back. If they played again this year, my money would be on Ruston. I don’t expect them to lose another game. Even so, I’m not sure they climb higher than the 6 seed. They are going to be a tuff out come playoff time. Ahmad Hudson and Zhy Scott are tough to deal with on the inside, and they have plenty of shooters on the outside. Look for them to make a run in the playoffs. Would love to see them and Zachary match up in Basketball, just like football.

NISH is still trying to figure out their identity with three starters leaving last season and just 9 kids on the roster this year. Chad has a state title and two state runners-up trophies to his name, if anyone can make adjustments to grind out a win, it's him. Injuries are going to determine how far this team goes, not talent.
All credit to Casey and the CHS team, too, they played a hell of a game. It's even more impressive when you consider the 12-point deficit they battled back from the night before to beat Franklin 50-49. Franklin was last year's Division IV runners-up and will make another appearance in the Top-28 this year.

I like New Iberia, Zachary, Ponchatoula & Ruston as the top four in the non-select boys division at the moment. Also considering Natchitoches-Central & Denham Springs
In boys select, I have a top four of Liberty Magnet, STM, Captain Shreve and Alexandria with Pineville, Scotlandville, Southwood, St. Augustine and Jesuit under consideration. Brother Martin and Catholic-BR as sleepers, if you can call a defending state champ a sleeper. I'm very high on Scotlandville. I think they're trending upwards. Pineville has had some tough losses lately.
In girls non-select, I have Walker, Parkway, Southside, Denham Springs as a top four with Haughton, Zachary and Natchitoches-Central on the bubble. Slidell is a darkhorse.
In girls select, I have Huntington, John Curtis Christian, Carencro and Tioga.

In the select side, I’m not buying Pineville and ASH just yet. On the girls side, I think NS is very heavy at the top of the bracket. Can’t see anyone outside the top 6 of having a chance.

[ I think Chalmette has the best player in the bracket in Terren Coffil… she came from John Curtis to join a team that made the quarterfinals last year. We’re 16-5, but the power rating won’t be there to host more than game if we host any at all. she gives us a chance to make a run to state

Ouachita upsets ruston 62to60 at the madhouse. Didn't see that coming. I've seen Ouachita play several times they didn't look good. Maybe they have turned the corner. That Alexandria Ruston game is going to be very interesting.

That Alexandria Ruston game is going to be very interesting. The parity across the state is amazing. There is heated competition at every level. I watched Loreauville get out to a 10-point lead on Franklin on Friday. Franklin came back, but Loreauville was right there with them, and Franklin is an elite Class 2A team IMO. I think I had St. Thomas Aquinas No. 25 in the first top 25 rankings I did for SB Live this season. They dropped out after a week, if I remember correctly, and Liberty has been No. 2 throughout behind Madison Prep. Well, STA beat Liberty by two. Ponchatoula, which I had moved down to around No. 12, blew out No. 3 Peabody. From what I've seen, they just need to keep Allen Graves out of foul trouble and they could win every game. No. 1 Madison Prep has won a ton of close games. There are probably 8-12 teams that all have a legitimate claim to the top overall spot. Here's another eye-opener - Westminster-Opelousas beat North Central. ETA - I watched Catholic-New Iberia lose by two at St. Thomas More, which will be No. 2 behind Madison Prep when the new rankings are released.

That Alexandria Ruston game is going to be very interesting. For whatever reason, Ruston always seems to struggle with Ouachita. They lost both games to them last year. OPHS took Hudson out of the game. He scored 9 points in the first half and didn’t do much after that. He got in some foul trouble but he was a non-factor in the second half. I still think Ruston is one of the four best teams in D1NS, but they have some things to fix before playoff time.

I may not have mentioned that I covered Lafayette High vs. New Iberia the other night. Lafayette High, which I had No. 24, beat New Iberia (No. 5) by one point, 35-34. Two great defensive teams.

Keep an eye on Liberty on the girls side. Catholic and Ponchatoula will be tough outs on the boys side. None of these have backed away from competition at all this year. Catholic has 2 heartbreaking losses to UHigh, one to Madison Prep, one to Newman

The 2 5a district up here is unpredictable to say the least. Ruston goes to ouachita and loses. West Monroe goes to ouachita and manhandled ouachita 59 to 34. Looks like that district is wide open. The only consistent up here is wossman the best chance for a title and the best team in the area.

We are down a few kids right now including our best player and one of the state, Jordan Mathews, been struggling for awhile without him, lost at home to Liberty, neutral court to Southwood, close one at home against Neville and getting by because the district isn't great. Not sure when or if he'll be back, but he's a glaring hole against Ponchatoula, because he he's the better matchup for their big man. Neville tonight, Wossman tomorrow. Would not be surprised to lose one or both without him and on the road.

Ruston drops another game tonight losing to ASH at home. Something is going on with this team. They scored 15 points in the first half. Just don’t seem to be playing very good basketball right now. Not sure if it was the OPHS loss or something else.
They have the talent to make the top 28. But if they don’t get it figured out the next few weeks, they may not make it out of round one.
Not to take anything away from ASH, but they aren’t very good either. Not one of the top teams in the state good. Just an average high school team.

I don't know whether I'm getting old or I'm working too much, but I find myself making errors like that in articles. I have editors, but they don't catch everything. Keeps me grounded, for certain. Once I submit an article, I can't edit it.
