So this seems like it's the best discussion I've ever seen on this board so in that spirit i would like to point out another issue with the Split. No one can deny it's a great experience. Part of this experience is the practice and picture day. But now that you have 9 games the practice times have gotten crazy. Two years ago Welsh had to stay an extra night because the practice was two days before the game. Far from an ideal situation and part of why St. Helena was able to make such a comeback in the second half. This year Eunice didn't even go for pictures because of the same reason. Livonia's team had to bus out around 5am when they went to make their practice time. Which used to be an hour fifteen and has now been cut to forty five minutes and it's a running clock after pictures. It's not realistic to think that a school can get more than thirty minutes in the current set up. Looking at a logistical point of view six games is the highest number that you can have without disrupting picture / practice day for the other teams these are the Thursday walkthroughs that teams usually have before a Friday game... but they can't have them on Thursday of Dome week at the Dome now bc there are three games on that Thursday.
the nonselects need to be prioritized for Dome practice times on that Tuesday or Wednesday bc they play the week before in their semifinals. maybe have them on opposite sides of the field via a random draw (but never have the teams that are gonna play each other practice at the same time)
the select schools in the Dome all are off that week so they already get their full week of practice (and there's a problem for the LHSAA. why are we paying for the Dome other than the three game days?)
honestly better work is done where a school usually practices. do Dome teams get the opportunity to decline the practice day?

Let’s say that oak grove many or Sterlington is playing in the dome
You want them to drive to New Orleans for the practice walk through then drive back
Then come back a few days later?

I was originally pro split but I hate how watered down the competition has become . Basically , if you field a team with a pulse, you make it to the State Playoffs. It is feeding into our participation trophy generation. Open enrollment schools and schools schools that have one football playing school in their Parish should certainly still be pro split. It is great for them.

if not, a Hahnville or Warren Easton who can easily get there should be able to take Many's time if they choose not to come that day
selects who make the Dome should be able to have an earlier practice day since they have more days off between their semis and the Dome

Exactly some schools have advantages some schools have disadvantages
Some with advantages are “select” and some are “non select”
Let’s work to get back together and figure out how to help all the schools get better. A lesson can be learned from those that win. Parents want what’s best for their kids and that leads to out of zone players. But what gets lost is the schools that are able to make the majority of their kids better WIN. They don’t have enough naturally occurring good players to keep any team who’s not in New Orleans afloat. So let’s look at teams north of Alexandria. Obviously Many is clearly one of the most successful teams in that area. Yes they are the only football playing school in the parish but their is no way that all those players could perform at that level if they weren’t being coached or trained and with our community support culture and administration supporting them it wouldn’t happen. Same at Notre Dame y’all wouldn’t believe how few of our players are actually out of zone but the Previously mentioned factors allow kids to develop. Same with Kinder and their run. The split has only changed who wins and that helps illustrates which programs have all the necessary elements to be successful. Let’s not envy who wins let’s study them and take those elements back to each School to make them the best that school can be.

So how many times should a team drive to New Orleans and back?

Don’t see it happening. For example a school like LCA being mentioned in top ten teams in state and playing in 1A or 2A is perfect example. A normal 2A or 1A school will never be a top ten team in state. Just giving you a look on what most principals that vote that way see. And I’m not throwing shade on LCA one bit, they should be proud of their program it’s just a bit different than Welsh Kinder or Many. Some great points on here but giving a major example of why most non selects will vote against it.

You really think LCA could have done with they did this year against an average strength of schedule? You and I earlier agreed on how much tougher 2a is than other leagues Kentwood was better than Southern Lab I don’t think LCA could have won a combined 1a bracket last season
Second question Would it be fair if all the selects had the votes to toss out all the non selects due to Edna Karr?
Third question So in a potential compromise would you agree that if football was separated and you could force people up that could alleviate the issue your speaking off?
Pushing Curtis and evangel Down was terrible Didn’t hurt them Six years of split Curtis wins twice why they had to go up On 3a one 5a title won and I don’t think Evangel has won in this span
Send the problem people up

Agreed on people mentioning it but it’s kinda back to the same thing earlier on people’s bias which agreed people may vote on that
As Washington is showing us Believe facts
Look at the win loss record of their opponents from last season before people jump to conclusions on how strong the team actually was

So, here's my idea (for what it's worth).
1) Class 1A becomes all NON-football schools with enrollment 200 or less - the 1A playoffs are not split 2) Class 2A becomes all football-playing schools with enrollment 200 or less - the 2A playoffs are not split (16-team bracket select) 3) All remaining schools are split evenly into Classes 3A, 4A and 5A - each has a Select & Non-Select playoff bracket ** all non-select brackets would be 32-team brackets ** ** also, let schools choose to play up as high as they want to go **
That's 8 champions in all sports, 7 for football. We could stay in the dome, do 3 games on Friday and 4 games on Saturday. I chose 200 based on 50 kids a grade, an equal halves male/female ratio means there should be 100 boys from which to find football players. Does it work out that way at every school? No, but I think anything above 200 is a decently sized school. Would there be some cheaters to manipulate the numbers? Probably. That issue could be solved by the LHSAA actually doing there job and investigating and punishing (all equally, no favoritism) those who break the bylaws.
Here would be the breakdown using the most recent enrollment numbers. NOTE: This plan is still not ideal for the SELECT in the upper-enrollment schools. The problem is there's no good place to make a break where you don't have really small selects playing much larger selects. My hope in coming up with this plan was that by having the smallest football class all-together that most would end up in that class. That's also why a 4-class, 3-division split would be tough as well to come up with a good demarcation line in the lower and higher enrollment selects.

So you think your 4a public enrollment gap is fair?
How do you think those schools with 4 & 5 hundred can play with the 700 and lower 800 club?
So you think your 5a public gap is fair?
Right now we have schools that in the 800s being destroyed by those in the 1000s and your plan is to make them play the 2000s?

I’m glad you recognized that the “select” side gaps are blatantly unfair
But you’re still not being fair with two large groups of “non select” schools
7 is more doable Still gonna have issues with practices and pictures though
Smaller bracket for smaller class probably better too

I can't understand why, when talking to a person opposed to the split, you hear " If anyone had any competitive spirit they would want to beat and play the best."
But when you talk to another person opposed to the split about combining 3A privates and 4A privates, the reply is "... the 3a private school kids being forced to play with the 4a private school kids. This isn’t fair to them."

So how many times should a team drive to New Orleans and back? Teams get two days in the Dome, their practice and then the game that weekend. If a team doesn't want to take the practice day it's on them. I'm pretty sure the coaches of every team in the Dome and maybe the principals too have a meeting in BR

To kbanes
Here is the difference If 3a and 4a kids should be playing together then why does this not happen on “non select” side
Hence being forced to do something since it doesn’t happen on both sides
Classifications were created to establish fair and equable competition
If you read the constitution of the lhsaa it states that schools only play teams from in their classification in the playoffs.
Seems pretty cut and dry to me If I’m missing something or isn’t clear please point it out and I’ll give you my reasoning on it

To chalmette
Yes you’re correct those teams have principals and coaches go
Agreed it’s on school if they don’t wanna go
But should a team be put at more of a financial disadvantage
From a logistical point of view practice should be day before you play

They finished 3rd in their own district, behind (and with losses to) both Lab AND Ascension Catholic. LCA dominated both of those teams in the semis and finals respectively. And I watched the 1A state championship game. Kentwood was very talented. But LCA would have beat them soundly too. LCA, along with SU Lab and Kentwood and AC, probably would have all also won the 2A non/select bracket and I would take LCA or S. Lab in last years 3A bracket too. If you think LCA wouldn’t have won the 1A non-select bracket last year, going away, you weren’t paying very close attention.

I don't think it would take much of a mental stretch to envision how some schools within a short drive to NOLA would feel if they had to face a yearly trip to Independence Stadium though.

I happen to disagree. Maybe Amite. The other 3...I don’t see it at all. And S. Lab was very talented. But I was at that game, and in my opinion, the 35-20 score wasn’t indicative of the game. It should have been worse. But I respect your opinion, and there’s no way to know, so it is what it is. LCA will be much better defensively this year than they were last year. There are some big question marks on offense. So we shall see

Clement kid was real good at qb
Definitely a difference maker
The team took a serious hit when he got injured as a junior
Who’s gonna replace the LB and the FS that made all the tackles?
Definitely agree that with no way to play those games that both of us think differently and it’s feasible we are both wrong

Martin Lee will be difficult to replace at MLB but everybody else is back. Plus Tyrell Lockett on the DL and Chris Celestine in the defensive backfield are eligible this year. Both will be on Cleans top 100 and will be big difference makers.

To kbanes Here is the difference If 3a and 4a kids should be playing together then why does this not happen on “non select” side Hence being forced to do something since it doesn’t happen on both sides Classifications were created to establish fair and equable competition If you read the constitution of the lhsaa it states that schools only play teams from in their classification in the playoffs. Seems pretty cut and dry to me If I’m missing something or isn’t clear please point it out and I’ll give you my reasoning on it I can't for the life of me find a breakdown of the number of team in each Select division versus the number of teams in each Select Classification. My suspicion is that the Select teams in Class 3 and 4 were combined because of the small number of Select teams in those classifications. I will offer a further opinion on this when I find an actual listing of the teams in each Select division. As for "...being forced to do something since it doesn’t happen on both sides...", well that is kind of what got us here, isn't it? Select schools and non-select schools do not generate their admissions in the same manner. That is no cause of concern for you. But, Holy Cow, let them change the way teams are classified for playoffs, and its time to burn the system down. This appears to me that it is a case in which you don't want to act the same fundamentally, but you wanted to be treated the same.
"Classifications were created to establish fair and equable competition". Yes, and Divisions were created to further refine fair and equitable treatment. You may disagree with that, but you are in the minority.
"If you read the constitution of the lhsaa it states that schools only play teams from in their classification in the playoffs." Sorry, I'm just not sure that this is true. I couldn't find it. I did find:
"14.3.1 Schools shall compete in Classes 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A and shall compete in districts as adopted by the LHSAA Executive Committee. The schools in each district shall consist of both select and non-select admission schools. Football schools shall be sub-divided into select admission and non-select admission schools for playoff competition."
and
"14.3.4 For playoff competition, schools that are classified as select schools shall compete in four divisions. Schools in Class 5A shall compete in Division I; schools in Classes 4A and 3A shall be combined and compete in Division II; schools in Class 2A shall compete in Division III; and, schools in Class 1A shall compete in Division IV."
If you can show me the quote that you allude to, I will be happy to consider conceding this point. I would hope that, if you can't can't find it, you will be willing to concede the point.
I don't really need any further amplification from you (other than to clear up your reading of the Constitution). We aren't having a dispute on rules. All of that is cut and dried. You don't like the rules, and I have no problem with that.
You are concerned that there is in enrollment between the top 4A school and the bottom 3A school of 730 students (1148-418) Please state the level of your concern for the massive difference between the most populus 5A school and the least populus 5A school (2408-1152) That is a difference of 1256. What should we do about that?
Or how about Class 1A? Poor old Ridgewood, with 67 students has to play in the same classification with Lasalle, at 249. That is like a 4-1 disadvantage. What do we do for those guys? A combined 3A/4A, does not have it as bad as some of the classifications that aren't slammed together. It sounds to me that you are advocating MORE classifications, not fewer.
I'll follow up when I find the school lists for Select/Non-Select.

You really think LCA could have done with they did this year against an average strength of schedule? You and I earlier agreed on how much tougher 2a is than other leagues Kentwood was better than Southern Lab I don’t think LCA could have won a combined 1a bracket last season Second question Would it be fair if all the selects had the votes to toss out all the non selects due to Edna Karr? Third question So in a potential compromise would you agree that if football was separated and you could force people up that could alleviate the issue your speaking off? Pushing Curtis and evangel Down was terrible Didn’t hurt them Six years of split Curtis wins twice why they had to go up On 3a one 5a title won and I don’t think Evangel has won in this span Send the problem people up *Clears throat* we beat Kentwood by 3 TDs last season. How could they be better than us? I actually think LCA rolls Kentwood too.

Kbanes
A few things
Yes I know private schools are a minority
As far as what you quoted on the constitution this was changed to due split vote. So it’s something to justify what was done. Again if it was so good do it on both sides.
Next the schools with 57 enrollment or other really low numbers Two points first our state offers 8 man football Second they are the smallest not a lot you could do Personally you’re right i would favor six classifications and all together which would shrink that gap
Next 5a gaps Again biggest and therefore gonna be bigger Also, 6 class plan which would shrink the gaps Also, you can’t compare situation where double enrollment in 400 group and double enrollment in 1000 group Someone else backed up this point on a previous post
Last and it seems there is the problem The “selects” draw their enrollment differently so therefore it’s ok Have you ever attended “select” school?
A “select” school doesn’t no “select” can enroll 100% of kids in their zone And if you can’t see that “not select” schools are getting out of zone kids too
